Need a good garage tire rack to store 4 to 5 tires
So been doing some garage work. Cleaned out pretty much everything, painted walls & ceiling, cleaned up the old greasy garage doors, had a hybrid flooring system put down on the old stained concrete. Huge improvement. But all of this means the car has been sitting outside for about a week. Had about 1" of rain the first night, bird crap on the cover. Wind to 38 mpg. And high temps from 69° to mostly high 90s, Been a wild weather week. It is killing me.
But finally it is now it is time to put it back together. I wanted to put in new storage cabinets, but finding the ones like I want is not happening. Years ago when we built the house I took some teflon coated cheap cabinets and reworked them to hang in the garage. They looked nice and have been serving the purpose. But with covid the plants are having a hard time meeting the demand for new cheap but nice looking cabinets that I would use for this purpose. Guess those oldies are going to have to be good enough for now. Ok on to the really question.
What I wanted to throw out there has to do with tire storage. I would like to see what others are using to store their spare sets or racing tires. How are you doing it. I had just had the mounted and balanced tire sets standing upright on the floor with a piece of 2x4 keeping them from rolling. They were all ready to go and easy to get to. Just taking up space and kind of an eye sore. So, now it is time to get them out of the way.
So what is everyone using to store theirs?
Been considering these, but not quite sold that either is the right choice yet. Not sure that these are the way to go, but current front runners.

Cheap, but not really able to get wide enough for 5 tires. Width limited to studs. Mine are 16" on center and would have to modify the mounting system to get a wider mounting point than 48 inches. So likely would have to settle for 4 tires. Also concerned that it will handle the weight when extended to 54". Reviews go both ways. Only allows for 2 attachment points with three lag bolts within about 12". Afraid that will weaken the stud. Side brackets are small compared to other brands. Like the clean look, but will there be problems with tires tipping over and crashing down on to someone or even the car?

Still inexpensive but more than above. Concerns when extended to 54" for strength. My 275/35R20 are 65lbs and 10.75" wide each so 5 require about 54". 5th is actually the spare that should be in the car. Keep it out unless we are on a road trip. See this for context... https://themustangsource.com/forums/...-spare-529258/
So 4 would be only 43". Mounting system is setup to allow more than 2 studs as attachment points with one bolt at each stud, except in the middle you get 2. Looks sturdy, but reviews still have concerns when extend to near the max of 58". Works well at 48".
Thoughts? Other suggestions for getting my 5 tires off the floor?
Wow that's one nice looking garage. Just saying. As far as the tire rack goes I have been searching and found that most of the ones that you can get to hang are pretty much like you have found. They only really accommodate 4 tires. I did find one that holds more 7-8 but that was tires only and had a load capacity of 200lbs. So probably wouldn't work. Did you consider a dolly. I seen some people have them and it makes it easier to move around then. Or even a floor rack.

Thanks! I really worked to get it to be more that a storage shed. It had kind of become that.
I did consider a dolly, that was my first go to. But, I am hoping to get as much as I can in the cabinets and off the floor. Really want to keep the floor cleared off as much as possible and show off that new coating. Since the tires really won't fit in a cabinet this was my next idea. Also now that I have the garage cleaned out I really like it that way. Just feels bigger and more like an extension of the inside. But as we all know, the garage is where you store your crap. If I can keep things off the floor as much as possible I am hoping that it will have a better chance of it staying that way. Thanks for the input!

yes indeed that is a very nice garage . . . I have fantasies of painting my garage floor like that, but first there is a LOT of crap that would have to be moved and cleaned off the floor
the first one looks iffy to me, not enough height on those end brackets and only two studs holding the weight
second one looks better -- it has more height and can be secured to several studs through the bar that runs along the wall
my initial thought was to build a simple floor-standing rack from 2x4's, but then I realized you want the whole thing up on the wall and off the floor completely

Yes I feel the same way about the first one. I liked the compact looks and it has great reviews, but I am concerned about the weight distribution in more than one way. Short height, only two contact points to bolt to the wall and then the closeness of the three anchor bolts on each side is concerning. Probably will go with the Hyloft rack unless someone brings up something better. Right now the selection is a bit limited and not what it was a year or two back. Guess that is true for nearly everything. Shortages everywhere. This Covid crap has made a big mess of everything. Sooner we can get back to something like the old normal the happier I will be.
That you need something somewhat custom because tire/wheel bigness... Seems to me you could buy the stuff at a Homely Despot or such and make whatever one you wanted, however wide you wanted. It's really just a couple of pipes to hold the tires, then a few straps to hold the pipes. You could make two, two tires each, and put them wherever at that point.
Just an idea. Then again, I'd be looking into maybe figuring out how to hang them from the hub or lug holes on the rims instead, thereby allowing no chance of even the teeniest of flat spotting from sitting on anything. Because reasons.
Just my $0.27 cents on it, adjusted for inflation from 1913 of course.
That's one beauty of a garage ya got there. And backyard driveway/patio situation for more car activities if need be. Want.
Ya, I have kind of been thinking that too. Not sure I am as good as some people out there of putting together a good looking custom solution. There have been several out of 2x4s and such. Just no ready to go that route yet. But still an option. Here are a few of the better ideas that I have came across in my search...
Probably my favorite solution. Looks clean and I think I could do this one. Will it be strong enough?
Another pipe solution. Like the idea, but the chains just don't do it for me. Maybe swap out with cable?
And another, but just not as clean as I wanted....
Another pipe build...
A good looking Lumber build...
And a metal angle iron build...
Still thinking this through. But leaning towards the Hyloft solution... Keep it coming. Thanks for the input guys!
@houtex Thanks for the compliments on the update, I appreciate it from all of you!

Not really sold on the choices here and have ran into some issues. Where I want to put it is on the wall on the cars passenger side in the photo above. Only catch is that it is 24" from the desired wall to the garage door track. Tires are about 27.5 diameter so the door track rail is not in a good place and will interfere if I put it at the desired 7 foot height. May have to put it lower than I want, but don't want a head banger. So likely if it goes on my first choice wall it will be above the door track, or at least high enough that it clears the track. May need to figure out a pulley system to get the tire on and off safely. Not sure yet how high that will have to be, but it is up there.
Ordered the Hyloft 1000, it is supposed to be here by 7/1. Guess we have a little time to figure this out or move it to a different location. I like the side wall because the tires would be hidden from view when the garage door is opened. We will see where this project goes, may have to find a different solution.
