What other Firebirds do you have? 1970-1973 were best Firebirds.

Unfortunately I haven't got any of the early second-gens (I love the '73 Super Duty), but I agree that those are some of the best 'Birds. One of the cars I have is the '79 Special Edition T/A 6.6 my dad "handed down" to me a couple years ago, another is an '89 Formula 350 I bought as a bit of a project car a couple years ago. I grew up in the 80s and liked the third-gens. Guess that was Knight Rider's fault.

On the way home, I stoped by local gas station and gas was $2.50 a gallon. Maybe that's why Chevy is going with 4-cyl instead of V8. If prices of gas keep going up the way they people won't be buying powerfull V8s no matter how good and cheap they are. Sales of Fords top Trucks and SUVs (F-Series, Explorer, Expedition) are already down (by a lot). I'm afraid something like that may even happen to Mustang in the next few years.

Maybe GM is right with whole Cobalt thing. Maybe Ford should focus more on Focus and other 4-cyl cars.

Umm, There's a V6 Mustang for those concerned with gas mileage. Ford planned on building more V6 Mustangs than V8s.
19 miles a galon is not for people concerned with gas mileage.

The V6 gets better gas mileage than that, thats what I get with my GT.

My 3.8L can't get better than 19-20 mph so its impossible for 4.6L to get same gas mileage.

You just validated my point, it lists the GT as 17 mpg, and I believe thats +/- 3 so its possibe to get 20 mpg with a GT.

If its +-3, then it could also be 14 mpg.

That has nothing to do with it being capable of getting 20 MPG, which you said is impossible.

hey BJ whats the story behind your ride and user name?
Hey Mr. Doug. Allow me to engage backstory mode. Well my ride is a '98 Ram Air T/A which I special ordered in January of that year and waited six months for; I've always been a big Trans Am lover and Pontiac enthusiast. My dad has owned a '79 "Bandit" special edition T/A for most of his life and that's what got me interested in the cars.

About a couple years after I got my T/A everything went to heck at Pontiac, and lately at GM in general; the axing of the F-body, the lacklustre (in my opinion) GTO, lousy designs and overpriced vehicles have all driven me away. That in addition to the fact that I've had nightmarish warranty service on my Trans Am thanks to several truly, truly awful Pontiac dealers in my area. Which is too bad because the sales experience I received was one of the best in my life.

When Ford unveiled the concept 2005 Mustang my jaw hit the floor. After being disappointed by the new GTO (while I liked the fit and finish, I was expecting it to look more aggressive, and when it did not, I was pretty bummed), the Mustang was exactly what I had hoped to see. I love the old Mustangs -- the first-gens were my first love, before Trans Ams -- and the '05 Stang really harkened back to those days. I was born to a primarily Ford family and have qualified for A-plan forever, guess it's time to go back to those roots. I guess it had been a little while in coming because for the past couple years (2001+) I had been seeing Mustangs on the road and really digging them, especially the Mach I. I loved the Mach.

So I chose the name "GMConvert." Cause I'm a convert from the General Motors camp.

I still love my old Firebirds -- I have three -- but I always need a new, exciting and totally kick-butt car for my daily driver, and as soon as I pay off the Mazda6 my wife is driving, that car is gonna be a Mustang. Ideally an S/E or a Shelby/Cobra.

thanks for the life story, i am glad u r being so cool on our site, i had problems with superbluegoat, he complimented his GTO and i ........didnt, lol i am glad u are now here at this very FORD site, following the beloved Mustang. I dont like the Newer Trans ams, but they were powerful. I saw a real sweet 68 Firebird, yellow, big wheels in back, small in front, huge old school style cowl hood, it was LOUD too, i am pretty sure u would of loved it. I am all ford and my familys had Camaros and Mustangs and now hate camaros and love stangs, Dad says his camaro was too slow, and uncle just says they arent easy to sell and a modded lightning or stock Cobra could beat them. Do u have any pics of all your Birds?

Its impossible for 4.6L Mustang to get that kind of mileage. My 3.8L Mustang can hardly get that kind of mileage (If I shift gears under 2,500 RPM and if I change air filter every 3,000 miles, which I do).

Hey, thanks for asking...believe me, it would never occur to me to be a jerk here...I love the Mustang, wouldn't be here otherwise. I always despised the ricer crowd that would show up and threadcrap on our old F-body boards, and I certainly wouldn't want to be part of that kind of crowd anywhere else. With the S197 Mustang, Ford's got the best modern representation of the classic American muscle car, and that's what I like. Every time I see one when I'm out driving -- even a V6 -- I strain my neck trying to see it.

You can see some pictures of my Firebirds here, if you like: http://www.bjrowan.com/gallery/

Thanks Doug! I try my best to keep 'em looking good. Believe it or not, the '89 actually has 226,000 miles on the clock. (The engine was rebuilt around 190,000 though.)

Everybody is hurting in SUV sales at the moment. From what I understand, GM is shutting down the Arlington, TX plant for 9 weeks because of slow SUV sales. (Arlington is one place where they make the Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche). The real goofy thing is the employees will make 95% of normal pay for that time period. :S

Just curious...if fuel price is the big concern...where is GM's hybrids?
