I have predicted 3 years ago that they would be one of the top 3, their styling and quality has jumped dramatically in the last few years.

Not to jump in this discussion too much . . . . but that has a lot to do with how our respective governments established import/export and trade tariffs. If the opportunities would have been the same on both sides of the pond then perhaps the Big 3 would have a much larger market and presence in Japan. But that is water under the bridge at this point . . .

Also, with regard to where cars are built and owned . . . . the intellectual property is where the real "coin" is found with regard to a manufacturer.

I can believe the thread title. Based on personal observation, the local Hyundai/Kia dealer lots are pretty sparse as far as selection goes. Even the showroom has empty floor space.

Ford will still produce in a quarter what they projected to sell for the year.
http://media.ford.com/images/10031/August11sales.pdf

The big thing for me is to see how they'll ride the title wave. We're in their 1st gen of cars that have finally stirred buyers. If they fail to do that in the upcoming years they'll slowly fade into white noise.

Kia vows to focus on quality over quantity

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/29/k...over-quantity/

Automotive News is reporting that Kia has announced plans to focus its efforts on building quality products instead of expanding its current line to fill every niche or broadening its manufacturing capabilities. The company's co-CEO, Lee Sam-ung, said that Kia doesn't plan to build any new manufacturing facilities any time in the near future. That news came in the face of concerns that limited production capability may hinder future growth, but Sam-ung said that global demand for vehicles is expected to subside soon.

In order to remain competitive, Kia will launch new models, strengthen its local promotions and work to enhance the company's competitiveness, Sam-ung said while at the launch of the 2012 Rio. Meanwhile, the executive also indicated that Kia still intends to launch two new electric vehicles, one in 2014 and another in 2015.

Let's hope Hyundai's search for a new CEO doesn't upset their 'mojo.'

Market Analysis Shows Hyundai, Kia Lead in Brand Loyalty

Auto market analyst group Experian Automotive released its second-quarter 2011 market analysis report, and the results show Hyundai Motor America came out on top in corporate loyalty – a U.S.-market first for the Korean company. Experian reports that Hyundai’s corporate loyalty rate held steady at 49.6 percent, enough to oust General Motors and Ford from the top spots, which scored 48.1 percent and 47.6 percent, respectively. Hyundai Motor America’s Kia brand had the highest brand loyalty ranking of any individual marque, at 47.9 percent. The Hyundai brand also performed well in brand loyalty, and was fourth highest in the rankings at 40.5 percent. In addition to being among the top brands in corporate loyalty, Kia had three models in Experian’s top 10 vehicles. According to Experian, the Kia Forte was the top model for customer loyalty at 68 percent, while the Kia Soul ranked fifth at 59 percent and the Forte Koup eighth at 57 percent. GM had the second best-performing model in brand loyalty, with the Chevy Cruze coming in a number two with 64 percent. Ford models rounded out the remainder of the top 10, with the Fiesta coming in third at 63 percent and the Fusion right behind in fourth at 57 percent.
“…Hyundai has been making strides in customer loyalty for several years,” said Jeffrey Anderson, director of consulting and analytics for Experian automotive. “The company’s innovation, 100,000-mile warranty program, and improvements in vehicle styling and quality among both brands have clearly helped them gain and maintain a strong and loyal customer base.”
According to Experian, Hyundai’s increase in corporate loyalty is also helping it gain market share. Experian reports that Hyundai saw the greatest year-to-date percentage increase of any brand, with the Korean automaker shooting from 7.9 percent in Q2 2010 to 9.2 percent in Q2 2011 for a gain of 1.3 percent. To put that in perspective, GM experienced the second largest market share gain with an increase of 0.5 percent in the same period, rising from 19.1 percent in Q2 2010 to 19.6 percent in Q2 2011.

You don't have read it if Korean cars don't interest you.

They're still much cheaper than Japanese (or American) cars and they offer more power, better fuel economy and longer warranty.

When it comes to quality, this long term test will tell you that Hyundai is below Lexus, Toyota and Acura, but ahead of Honda, Infiniti, Subaru, Scion, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Suzuki.

Where's your evidence to support the fact that they're just as expensive in overall cost of ownership?

ha!
you pin a turbo charged optima (270hp) vs a bunch of regular 4 cylinder (170-190hp) cars. and the sonata is comparably equal to the others.

this IS a mustang forum... that has a GENERAL VEHICLE DISCUSSION area. if you don't want to see non-mustang cars being talked about, stay out of this area. simple as that.

Hyundai Sonata
2.4L 198 hp
24/35 mpg
Base MSRP: $19,695

Ford Fusion
2.5L 175 hp
22/32 mpg
Base MSRP: $19,850

Honda Accord
2.4L 177 hp
23/33 mpg
Base MSRP: $21,380

Toyota Camry
2.5L 178 hp
25/35 mpg
Base MSRP: $21,955

Nissan Altima
2.5L 175 hp
23/32 mpg
Base MSRP: $20,410

Chevrolet Malibu
2.4L 169 hp
22/33 mpg
Base MSRP: $21,955

Hyundai Sonata = most horsepower, tied for best fuel economy, smallest price.
If we compare Elantra vs Focus, Cruze, Corolla, Civic ... it will also offer the best fuel economy for the smallest price. It will also beat majority of competition in the horsepower race. If we compare Accent vs Fiesta, Sonic, Fit ... same results.

compare apples to apples like I did with KBB. Then Hyundai is the MOST EXPENSIVE. Not even considering the resale value is in the toilet as compared to Honda/Toyota.
Get over Korean cars.. They are for people who have no clue. Look at these comparisons.. Hyundai LAST place.. or somewhere the middle.. Crap cars.. Always have been and always will be

Base MSRP vs base MSRP. How much closer apples to apples would you like?

If Korean cars don't interest you - stay out of this topic. Go read whatever does interest you.

EDIT: speaking of re-sale value ... Sonata beats them all after 5 years (and considering the fact that majority of people take a 5 year loan on a new car ...).

Made up list. Go to any used car lot and price out the used Korean cars vs Japanese. The Japanese cars will always be higher. ALWAYS. No one wants a used crap car!

edit- I just looked on ebay and sure enough. The first sonata(a 2004 model) with 127k miles gets $4k. The first Accord with the same mileage(TWO years older!!!!! no less) gets $7k. Case closed. Not even close
