How about a new, V-8 powered Mercury coupe?

According to media.ford.com, Mercury will make six new cars over the new several years. Lincoln will make five. Let's hope they make a new, rwd Mercury coupe.
It would need the 05 Mustang's chassis but with totally different styling.

Nothing earth shattering, but it's a start. If nothing else Mercury's are always better built than their Ford counterpart. They still need to define themselves more. They need a COUGAR;-)

I would love to get a Cougar based on this platform. It would be the perfect complement to the Mustang. It would be the car for people that want more of the creature comforts like dual climate zones, heated seats, defrosting mirrors, HID, and such. I could see a market for this car and it would breathe life back into the Mercury brand.

The concept of such a Cougar (and your list of requested improvements) certainly would interest me. A lot. I nearly bought a Cougar in 93 / 94 when it was based on the T-Bird. An associate had one – and I drove it several times.
To your list I would add a few:
SST / manumatic for the auto trans
a roofline that would allow a moonroof option.
And I would, quite seriously, buy one. Assuming pricing was reasonable.

Thinking that even with all these additions, it would likely still be a 14.0 second car – on regular gas . . .

an enthusiast after my own heart.
yep, Mercury DESPERATELY needs its version of the Mustang, imo.
but i think they're done with performance cars for awhile.
ah well, at least Ford's on the right track with the original pony car.

I guess if they're going to pitch the concept above, then at least they can leave us the wheels.... I like those

Maybe that will be the reason why they will build a new rwd cougar. They desperately need attention from the younger crowd. Those snow birds aren't getting any younger.

Snowbirds aren't just the old blue haired ladies, snowbirds refer to anyone that lives in the snow belt and lives in Florida during the winter. Most of the time it's in the form of an RV. I see RV's all the time down here in the winter with Minnesota, Wisconsin, ect... plates on them.
