Help me pick a DD

So I'm going from <10min commute to a ~40min commute and so will need a DD. We're buying a new house and I'm only a year+ into my GT loan so I'm looking for something cheap, but a little sporty, with good MPGs. I want a WRX but I'm seeing Mini Cooper S's for under $10k touting ~30mpg. Any better ideas? Not a huge fan of the Mini.

I have become a big fan of lexus. We had a gs300 23+ mpg's and never had a problem with it. we sold it with 174k miles on it still running strong.

Thanks for the replies so far. Will look harder after work. Buddy just suggested Jetta diesel so adding it to the list. Would love AWD but not sure I can squeeze it into my budget.

Hyundai accent. I got 37.5mpg in an 05 auto I was driving. That thing hated gas.

Lol, was the Hyundai any fun to drive whatsoever? Looking for something that won't bore me to tears.

I agree that most of German cars (including Mini) are pretty expensive to maintain once warranty expires, but still I wouldn't go that far to say that all European cars are like that ...

Dude it's kinda tough getting something in the middle IMO. Going clutch always makes it more interesting.

What about Focus? They're cheap to buy and maintain, they get good gas mileage, quality is pretty high and they're fun to drive.

Just fwiw, I wouldn't go near a Cooper S being offered for less than $10k.

Highly recommend giving Miata a serious look. I drove one as a DD for 5 years and I'm still kicking myself for selling it. If you park outside at work you may want to invest in the lift-off hardtop but otherwise it's fun to drive and sips gas (when you aren't thrashing it).
