Who knows how long GM will continue to import the aussie GTO's. Once the monaro is due for a restyling, maybe they will invest some money to give the GTO more exciting sheetmetal.

Too bad, I was really looking forward to seeing a new GTO.
The problem with that theory is that the Monaro designed to suit Aussie tastes, which is one reason why it doesn't quite have the same appeal here. I doubt they would restyle it to suit American tastes when its primary market is Australia. A compromise in style would probably hurt sales in both markets.

Mark,

what they could probably do is use distinctive sheetmetal for each car (which would mean expanding their metal shop). It would be a bit of an investment, but would probably result in better sales for the GTO in the US.

To minimize cost, they would obiously be limited to things like the exterior sheetmetal and couldn't really play with the roofline and such.

Given their current financial situation, I doubt they would spend the money to do the car right.

i think that GM should just call themselvs General Trucks And Ugly Cars, and just give up hope, to sacrifice cars for trucks, to leave the GTO floudering, and to basically if not kill, make ppl wait longer for a possible rear wheel drive pony car is just sickening, they should just throw in the towel.

Great idea but GM doesn't have a history of altering the sheetmetal, especially to provide that much differentiation between products. Given the current state of GM management, they'll probably do exactly what I said and design a conglomeration designed to sell in both markets and it's be an utter failure in both.
