hey guys. i was looking around on a few car classifieds sites and im wondering: Why do 93-95 RX7s cost sooo much? $20K for a 10+ year old car? i mean the 91 and ealiers are dirt cheap. whats the deal with the 93+? dont get me wrong, i love these things (and the RX8s). thats why i was looking at em. but why so much?
are these just Turbo'd versions? are they ALL turbo'd? im not well educated when it comes to mazdas (even though we own to proteges) but i've been considering an RX7 or RX8 (if i can afford one) as possible car. the RX series is my all time fave Import, and i really wanna learn s'more. i yahoo'd and googled, but i didnt find much info. maybe im just not a good searcher....
so anyone wanna fill me in?

Well one being the 91 and older are just plain older and have had more time to depreciate. Second if you are going to compare prices between a 91 and a 93, you have to compare turbo to turbo. The dealer retail on a '93 is about $9,300 and on a '91 turbo about $4,900. There was also a significant power difference between the two. The '91 turbo has 200 hp while the '93 has 255. Personnally I think the '93+ RX-7's are just a better looking automobile than the earlier models. I would say a '93 is definitely worth the extra money. Oh and if you need a backseat, you will need an RX-8 or '91 or earlier RX-7 since the latest model RX-7 only sits two.
Oh forgot about your turbo question, in '91, the RX-7 was available in a n/a version, a turbo version, and a vert. '93 only offered a turbo version.

Yes, all 3rd-gen RX-7's ("FD's") came equipped with twin sequential turbos and the 1.3L rotary engine rated at ~250 HP and ~250 ft-lbs. Why so expensive?
Well, like turbo Supras, these vehicles are excelent performers out of the box and have an impressive capacity for performance-oriented upgrades (coupled with a lot of aftermarket support). 3rd-gen RX-7's were also light (appx. 2800 lbs.), had fully independent suspension, powerful brakes, an LSD, and other assorted performance goodies. Really, just a helluva car. Aside from the technical bits, the car looks sharp, inside and out. I can't think of another car from the 1990's that aged better than this one.
The car you linked is ~20K, which I think is reasonable for a unique car with such low mileage. Think about it, 63K miles spread over 12 years is only about 5K miles a year, pretty low. Of course, you'd want a Mazda tech to inspect and and also ensure that all recalls have been performed. For more info. about buying one, I'd find a big 3rd-gen message board and look for a detailed buying FAQ. Here's a good General FAQ to start. Good luck.

Just now saw your link to cars.com. Personally I think they are asking too much for that specific car, you can find some for less for less miles even. Here is one for $12,500 and 36k miles.

Arin,
I don't know much about the newer RX-7's other than I think they are awesome cars and I'd love to have one. But before you get too excited about these rockets you should check out insurance prices. I'm sure it would cost you the proverbial arm and a leg. That's just a fact of life.

plus side..... great performance great handling low weight and no rust (all aluminum frame and body) also respond VERY well to mods.
down side....... insufficient cooling from the factory. This is why you read so many ads that say "new engine at 40k or 50k miles". If you get one, if you are tall (6 ft 2 plus) don't get the sunroof version or you won't fit. Also make sure it has either had the engine recently replaced or it has had the cooling system upgraded. If the engine has been replaced, plan to upgrade the cooling system in order to keep the engine. A new water pump, silicon hoses and a large aluminum radiator with dual fans will do the trick. Also (I know it's tacky but it works) a functional heat extractor hood works well on those models because of how the radiator is mounted.
I was going to get one a while back but could not find a non-sunroof car for the right price, and one with the cooling system upgraded already.

the insurance rate on that is UNBELIEVABLE! my doctor has a black one just like the one pictured in the first post, and it looks HOT! even though i'm kinda against ricers, I would take an rx7, 300zx, supra, or sti any day
