Good economical SUV/Truck that can tow something!
I'm thinking about a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I've always liked the Jeeps, but I want something that can tow at least 4000lb payload. I want something that can also keep for a couple of years while I build my project (69 boss replica) and it'll need to tow that plus the trailer. I'm also looking for descent gas milege, since it'll be my daily driver.
Any recomendations?

Thinking along the same lines as you....
Now that the Bullitt is coming in Dec. '07/early '08, I decided to buy a cheap, used vehicle to save $$ for a down payment on a Bullitt.
I bought a '98 Cherokee (the old box-style) w/83K miles on it for less than $6K. It is rated to tow 5000lbs, has the 4.0 I-6 that is supposedly very reliable and part-time 4wd if needed. I've had it about a month and am getting around 18-20mpg commute cycle (auto tranny).
So far so good...

My first thought was a Ranger, but the interior is way too small for me, as far as a truck is concerned. My next thought was a Dakota, but they are ugly, IMO. The only Jeep I actually like is the Wrangler. I just can't see myself driving something calling itself a Jeep that has a hardtop. Just a contridiction to me.

Mustang's interior is not small for you, but Ranger's interior is?
In that case, how about F-150 with V6? Although difference between 4.2L V6 and 4.6L V8 is not that big.

F-150's gas milege is almost as bad as my mustang's. I feel more confined inside trucks than I do in my mustang. Simply because in a truck my legs aren't streched out.
I had an '04 F150 with a 4.6 in it. Had to refil once a week, whereas my mustang is only did once every other week. About the same amount of driving with each.

Are you limiting yourself to new vehicles? Bec an older Cherokee would be pretty good for this. I dont know the towing cap or mileage on Libertys, but I've driven them and they seem nice for small suvs.
Or you can get an Escape

The EScape is ok, just not enough power output for me...
I'm looking more into the SUV type. Trucks are just alittle too expensive for what I'd like.
I'm not limiting myself to new vehicles, just newer cars usualy last longer...

How bout a 1998 Chev S10 ZR2? 4X4 4.3L Vortec V6, 190hp, 250 torque. Max towing is in the 4000-5000lb. range. I just happen to have one for sale with a brand new tranny in it. Gets 20mpg around town.
