Hopefully for GM this won't be a case of too little too late. Unfortunately the ripple effect will touch a lot more people than just GM employees.

GM could have avoided all these layoffs if they were to build exciting products.

What is the point of having 8 brands when there is little distinction and the brands have no direction.

Why does GM's "excitement" division have a minivan, soon an SUV and only one rear-wheel drive car? just as an example.

The Aztek, while it may have been ahead of its time, was ugly and awkward IMO. It was priced much higher than the ugly boxes that the kids are snapping up these days. The element and scion, while not the prettiest cars on the block, are cheap, and within reach of entry-level buyers who might like that look.

Was listeinging to one of those stock market shows on cable, one of the "experts" say GM needs to cut around 225,000 jobs and what they are doing is just a bandaid. Predicts unless something more drastic is done, look for them to be like United, declare bankruptcy, stop the retiree pension fund/healthcare, etc. Would hate to see that happen to all those affected. Have a friend who retired as a mechanic with United and he has lost retiree healthcare and his pension is being picked up by the Pension Guarrany Fund (?) - he is not sure how much it will be reduced.
