Flat tire question

so coming out of school today, I ran accross a couple with a flat on their car. It was a '98 Accord sedan or so. So being the car dude, I helped them, we got the lugs (4) off the tire, and popped the center cap off, to pull the tire off, and it would not come loose. I looked into the center of the tire, there was a metal looking piece, I thought it was the hub, but the tire would not come off. Luckily I had my compressor, and the tire held air. My question is, what was that, and how do I get it off?

Next time jack the car up first, you should be able to get the wheel off with weight off the tire.

well, we had it jacked up, and all the lugnuts were off, and the tire still felt rock sold, usually they almost fall off, but I was really puzzled.

My Civic wheels would rust to the lugs. I just gave it a good hard kick.
