The End of Chrysler...
If scrapping Chrysler in order to get their hands on 11 billion is the motive, I'd have serious concerns and objections if I were an elected official. Killing Chrysler and eliminating thousands of jobs for corporate self preservation is highly unethical. It's corporate raiding plain and simple.
I doubt a deal under those terms or immediate possibilities gets done.

This merger tells us a lot about the shape GM is in. Cerberus is dangling the 11 billion dollars that goes with Chrysler like a carrot, and despite the fact that taking on Chrysler is going to make every problematic logistical issue at the General even worse GM is so cash strapped that they just don't care. It looks like GM has resorted to simply gritting their teeth, closing their eyes, and squeezing the trigger on this deal despite what common sense is telling them because they can't come up with a better answer. Perhaps they are hoping that somehow they can manage something so miraculous with that 11 billion dollars that they can dodge (no pun intended) the bullet pulling the trigger on this deal is going to let loose.
That is desperation pure and simple, and says a lot about how close bankruptcy is for GM. Even more tragic, under decent management Chrysler represents a much easier and cheaper fix than GM does since they lack GM's rather severe brand redundancy problem and aren't quite as desperate for cash. Alas, it looks like GM's final major foray into stupidity may be making certain that they don't ride into that dry, dusty sunset alone. What a bunch of ***holes.

Meanwhile, did anyone catch this CR story?
Also, Ford is reportedly pulling away from its domestic rivals in the reliability arena with the majority of its models, including Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, now scoring above the industry average.

I would think there would be another automobile company interested in purchasing Chrysler....? Other than just GM? I mean with the cash that would go with the deal, it would only make sense that another potential buyer would make a real run at it...

It's sad to see the state that Chrylser's in now. It's funny but the handwriting's been on the wall for me since the "merger of equals". Daimler went in, dumped all the American management, brought in German management & got the cash they needed at the time. Then the made some really bad decisions, times got tough, and they dumped Mopar, which Cerebrus bought up.
Thanks for destroying Mopar, Daimler. Of course nobody holds Daimler responsible.

As for the Chrysler, and Dodge brands are concerned. Ford could either sell them off to Nissan/Renault, whose also expressed interest in acquiring part of Chrysler as well. Or Ford could just simply dissolve them altogether.
Therefore, how is this wasting money ? As I'm sure that Chrysler's 18 Billion would definitely benefit Ford, and not hurt them.
That being said, if this is truly a waste of money. Then explain how the same deal would benefit GM, and not Ford.
The last I checked, GM has far less money to waste, than what Ford does !

Ford has enough problems managing their own brands, they don't need another brand.
Chrysler has only one vehicle that could benefit Ford and that's Jeep Wrangler. The rest of Chrysler's lineup is a joke.
If Ford wants to spend money on something they should buy remaining 2/3 of Mazda.

There would be no competition, if Commander and Grand Cherokee replace the Explorer, and Excursion altogether. As Excursion just uses way too much fuel, due to it's huge size. And Explorer is just getting plain old anyhow !
Hey Rocky, the Excursion hasn't been made in several years. I believe you are meaning the Expedition.
