Challenger production a "go"

From CNNMoney.com:

Dodge challenger back for another spin:
Move comes as Big Three look to muscle cars for edge over Japanese imports.
June 30 2006: 12:42 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Chrysler division of DaimlerChrysler AG is expected to announce on Saturday production plans for a new Dodge Challenger coupe styled and named after the automaker's classic muscle car, newspapers reported.

The V8-powered Challenger will go on sale in 2007, but Chrysler will promote the car this summer to try to pull customers into showrooms, The Wall Street Journal and Detroit News reported, citing people familiar with the company's plans.

Chrysler's announcement of the new Challenger tomorrow at a Nascar race in Daytona Beach, Florida, was moved forward by several months in hopes it will create some buzz for the automaker, the newspapers' sources said.
The two-door Challenger, based closely on the 1970 model of the muscle car, will boast a 425-horsepower V-8 engine. Chrysler plans to build the car on the vehicle platform used for its Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

The Challenger's faithful redesign comes after Chrysler was assailed by critics for bringing back the 1960s muscle car name "Charger" on a four door sedan.

Industry watchers expect the Challenger to be priced to compete with the Ford Mustang which runs from $19,000 to $26,000, depending on the engine and other options.

The news comes as the Big Three automakers harken back to the golden age of muscle cars. The reborn Mustang has been a hit for Ford since its 2005 redesign. Struggling General Motors is expecting to relaunch the Chevrolet Camaro within the next few years. A concept version of that car was also introduced at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, the same show at which the Challenger concept was unveiled.

"The historical significance of the Challenger takes it back to the days when the Big Three dominated the highways," said Erich Merkle, an analyst with IRN Inc. of Grand Rapids told Detroit News. "The design represents a place were the Japanese can't follow."

Well, looks like the Challenger will coming soon.

Thumbs up

See, I like this not just because I Mopars, but also because it will give Ford and GM a reason to improve their models. This is just what the US auto industry needs...

you would think they wouldn't put it on that platform, and build a new one if they were going to be serious...I mean...Mustang didnt get built off of the taurus platform, right?....and the Camero is its own car too....PLUS, the magnum came out in 2004 as a 2005, right?...so by the time the challenger gets around to being built, that platform will be 4 years old...and if they plan on doing it for 5 years, that will be a decade old platform before the first redesign....

The mustang managed to hang around with the same platform for 25 years.

I knew someone would bring that up, but I thought that maybe companies would try to steer away from doing that again...

Well 25 years is too long IMO too, but 10 isnt too bad. Itd most likely be less than 15 before the redesign. 15 sounds long too, but itd still be a decade fresher than the mustnag was when they cut that off.

Good. Maybe Ford will not rest on its laurels. Also, my co-worker had a '70 Challenger... Maybe he'll be able to get this one since he wishes he could've kept the old one.

i think the challenger is great, its an awesome car, but i think the sang will be the sales king, since the challenger interior and options will not allow you to get it close to the concept, or at least not affordably.

my dad is thinking of buying one just so he can beat my stang, i say go for it, i have the stang for other reasons, and also, i get to drive a challenger once in a while!!!!!

This is indeed good news.

It would be great if they said what production specs would be, or at least how they expect things to change from the concept...but I kinda know that is just wishful thinking at this point...

I will be tempted only if it's offered in a manual transmission.
