Be interesting to see the state of the market by this time. What were the GTO expectations for sales? I can't remember, but I bet DC has kept a close eye on the backlash the GTO has received (not to mention some who feel a 4-door Charger is out of place).

just got this from CNN.com

Report: Dodge Challenger to return

The resurrected Challenger will be a two-door coupe, like the early 1970s original.
June 13, 2005: 10:00 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - It's starting to look like the muscle car wars of the late 1960s are coming back for real. Following this year's introduction of the Dodge Charger, the next muscle car name to be resurrected will be the Dodge Challenger, according to a report in the industry weekly Automotive News.

The Challenger will be based on the same platform as the Charger, which shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Magnum wagon, according to the report. The newspaper cites industry sources including outside analysts familiar with the development program.

No-one with Chrysler Group, the division of DaimlerChrysler responsible for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. would talk about the program, Automotive News said.

Unlike the Charger, the Challenger will be a two-door car, according to the report. That would put it in direct competition with the recently redesigned Ford Mustang and the Pontiac GTO. The current Charger has four doors.

Like the Charger, 300 and Magnum, the Challenger will be available with an optional V8 "Hemi" engine, Automotive News said.

When it was originally introduced for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was a small "Pony Car" competitor to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

The car is scheduled to be introduced in 2009, Automotive News said. The report said the company expects to sell 60,000 to 70,000 Challengers a year.

The Challanger with a 425hp Hemi? It would definately be a competitor and good for the industry. I hope they do it from scrath and not like the Charger.

Only thing we need is Camaro and Firebird, maybe even Chevelle and we'll have the most famous muscle cars back into production.

Ah, another blast from the past may be resurrected. This is all good. I remember seeing these things with some incredible engine packages back then. But I have to tell you all, the good old days are now. More powerful engines which are cleaner and get better mileage while delivering higher performance--who could complain about that? Add more safety features, more advanced suspensions, far better tires, and in most cases better styling (forget the GTO--zzzz) and you've got a great package.

To Ford's credit, they gave us the 2005 Mustang when there was no competition to force them to do so. In the future, things can only get better.

Since plans for the 2008 GTO are still on track (and from the concept photos I've seen so far, it'll be a stunner) with a Holden-engineered Zeta platform (just because GM of USA isn't working on it, doesn't mean it no longer exists... and Holden is nice enough to engineer it for both right-and-left-hand drives, just in case!). If this new GTO gets the nod, I predict we'll see a Chevelle.

Actually, I'd rather see a Chevelle and GTO instead of the Camaro/Firebird duo.

A Chevelle would be neat, as long as they had an SS model

Sadly I don't think there are any plans in motion to bring the Falcon's from Austrailia to the US .

I would be nice though

Another car company late to the party. It a really great time for Ford. By 09, even if Chevy has a Stang competitor and Dodge makes the 2 door Challenger, we'll have the Mustang GT, Shelby GT500, and at least an inbetween model. on the competition though. Hopefully it'll keep Ford on it's toes in regards to the Mustang.
