A very good question, but I think most have been listed above...it's really kinda weird the way GM named the new Camaros, because the Z28 was always the V8 performance Camaro - the SS Camaro was usually above the Z28 with even more horsepower. So if they would have kept everything like it was, all the SS 5th Gen Camaros would have been Z28's, and this new model would (or could be) called the SS. As someone stated above the Z28 was originally designed to compete in the Trans Am race circuit in the late 60's, and had a smaller displacement 5.0 engine (which was required for the Trans Am racing). Just seems a shame to me that they didn't keep the lineup the same.

How about a new moniker since GM messed up the works by putting "SS" on vehicles clearly not worth the badge. "SSC?" or "ZL1" which would be the most appropriate.
As for a "proper Z/28" to go up against the Boss 302, perhaps GM could use a version of the 5.3 or LS5 destroked to 302/305 CID. IIRC, there was a destroked version of the LS1 in a 4th gen F body (engineering exercise) that made 425+hp and could rev to around 7k rpm. Definitely needs to lose some weight in the process.

Maybe they should bring back a modernized version of that old LS1 monster of an engine. I hate to admit it but chevy struck gold with that thing back in the day. Ive raced a ton of 2000-2002 z28's before i got my mods and they would whoop my ***! Now with howmmuch power im makin it a close race but i manage to inch ahead almost every time

Not sure what you mean, every Chevy V8 built since then is a variant of that engine...

the LS3 is a 6.2L and a S/C and turbo set up would add weight to an already heavy car. i'd rather see an LS7 Camaro more than anything else.

Whoops, i guess i was thinkin of some other engine. Idk why but that number is the one that popped up in my head. Idk if they are gonna rename it z28 then major weight changes are needed. Most likely theyll take ideas from the zr1 and use alotta carbon fiber inside and out

Alot of Camaro fans feel the same way, but as I understand it, the LS7 is going to die when the C6 goes out of production. The next gen Z06 will have a supercharged V8.

The LSA is cheaper to build even with the extra hardware. I suppose when the Z/28 hits, it will come in at a higher price than the standard GT500 but will offer few options but will be cheaper than a loaded GT500 - that seems to be GM's game - offer the car with more content at an intially higher price but ultimately when loaded up comes in a few dollars cheaper than the comparable Mustang.

lol @ being released in 2012 already late to the game why not make it later.
They really need a year to put a new engine (that already exists) in a car?

The RS reminds me of the S197 PP as well.

I thought IROC were only 5.0 and 5.7 V8 cars.

Being that they went with the SS I think they will continue with older heritage style name, although Z28 isn't bad IMO. I like the names SS1 in white and SS2 in red, but agree that the product didn't fit.

The CAR for the mostpart was already done a while ago.(changes could have been made a long the way)

It was the approval and $$$ issues that were the reason it wasn't done right away. GM had some issues a little while ago

I'm sure there are stories out there about the Camaro's developement/production that would make your head spin.

Well according to motor trend their using the supercharged LSA engine as the power plant. As for details about reworked body panels and any other weight savin options hvnt heard much. They did redesign the interior a little bit because they fuxed some issues due to the inside being a sore spot on the camaro design. Lets see what gm can do to compete with the gt500

While the chassis more refined, the CTS-V offers a good look at what a Z/28 might be capable of.

They are bringing back the z28 and it is gonna be the same body and heavy car as the 2011 ss camaro but will most likely have different appearance options and interior options and likely a supercharger.....so ya they are totally destroying what a z28 use to be but they had to to keep up with the other pony cars....

Its a real shame that GM isnt putting all their effort into bringing back a true modern representation of a z28. Instead theyre slapping on a supercharger, doing some minor exterior/interior changes, and stickin on some badges. People are going to be buying it just for nostalgia and outside looks. As for overall package and living up to its legendary name the mustangs are the cream of the crop. Perfect example of what each automaker should strive for. Stick to the lineage and follow its history. Breaking new ground while at the same time remaining faithful to the name.
