Lutz: GM mulls 4-cylinder engine for new Camaro
Chevrolet Camaro concept
By RICHARD TRUETT, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS
NEW YORK -- General Motors is considering a four-cylinder engine for the new Chevrolet Camaro as a response to rising fuel prices.
Speaking on the sidelines of the New York auto show, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said the drivetrain under consideration for the Camaro is the same high-performance one used in the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters. It’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder rated at 260 hp. Lutz said that if fuel prices continue to climb, the four-cylinder Camaro could see production.
GM has said it plans V8 and V6 versions of the Camaro but otherwise has been secretive. Lutz confirmed to Automotive News that the V6 version of the Camaro will be powered by the same high-tech V6 used in the Cadillac CTS. It’s a direct-injected, 3.6-liter four-cam V6. In the CTS, the engine is rated at 304 hp.
Low-priced version dropped
In the Camaro, the 3.6 liter’s horsepower should be around 260, Lutz said, Fuel economy, he said, will be around 17 mpg city and 25 highway. That would place the V6 Camaro among best in class for a performance car.

Lol they already are. Pedders already has suspension components out for it. They have for at least 6 months . They just need final weight for their line of springs to know what to set them out. Others are just waiting on engine confirmation to make items like headers. Full bolt-ons should be out by the time the Camaro is on sale, and unless an all new engine is placed in it HP tuners already has tuning capabilities for the LS3, L98, L76, and the DI 3.6.
nice. but it's kind of hard to develop/produce some of that aftermarket when they don't have a car for final fit.
They can do a lot with computer modeling etc, but having the real thing makes a difference still.
I'm sure there's some nice bling GM could sell

Wow, suddenly it's 1974 all over again, 'cept instead of the Mustang II we're gonna see a "Camaro II".
A four-banger in a 'Maro...? Lotsa luck with sales there, GM.

GM's always 5 years too late to the market.
Edit for the people who like to argue repetitively in threads: GM's often 5 years too late to the market.

There are a lot more "weenies" than muscle car enthusiasts now days...
yep, and so does Ford, with more V-6 Mustangs, too. And so won't Dodge with their Challenger. It's what they need to do, to keep in business in the V-8 performance market. As long as the three auto maker's keep up their V-6 production, we'll have more new toys for us. Sooo, if they have to add a four banger to their indivual fleets, it not a real bad thing.
The young weenies driving the 4 bangers can put fart cans and big wings on them for that "domestic rice" look/sound..lol
I do agree tho GM has got alot of catching up to do if they want a market share...IMO..even if I was a Chevy guy, I'd give up waiting on GM and buy a Mustang...they have alot more to offer the gearhead than GM will...the Camaro will have a few paint/tape specials and prob an SS model, and some tuner cars but other than that...they just don't have the backing like the Mustang does..I give it less than 3 yrs..the Camaro will be a flop

And the Mustang will be the reigning champ of the Pony car wars..FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is if Ford keeps doing what they are currently doing as far as marketing and retro ideas and don't let the success go to their heads...

Retro has it's limits. Not everything in the Mustang retro source book between say 1973 and 2004 is all good
