Challenger getting supercharged for 2013?

Caught Testing: 2013 Dodge Challenger Supercharged - Spy Shots

Sorry to all the Dodge Challenger fans out there, but your pride and joy has been licking its wounds since the Camaro ZL1 and Shelby GT500 came roaring into town. The playing field could soon be leveled, however, thanks to this sighting of a mysteriously camouflaged Challenger SRT8 392, recently caught rolling along public roads. Much of the car remains stock, except for the curious covers over the front fascia. Rumors suggest this is the long-awaited high performance version of the Challenger, a Mopar muscle machine expected to have approximately 550 bhp, thanks to an Eaton supercharger, and the firepower to take on its fiercest cross-town rivals at Chevrolet and Ford.

Blast From the Past
It’s hard to label the 470-bhp 6.4-liter V-8 engine found in the current Challenger SRT8 as underpowered. Yet in the upper echelons of the current muscle car war, this is now 80 horsepower less than the Camaro ZL1, and a whopping 180 horsepower down on the Shelby GT500. Dodge obviously had to answer the call to arms, or risk being an also-ran to the competition. We’d hedge our bets the supercharged Challenger will target the Camaro ZL1-levels of horsepower. But breathe easy Ford fans, we’d be shocked if the GT500 was knocked off its perch as having the highest output of this triumvirate. A 6-speed manual is likely to be the only transmission offered with the supercharged Challenger.

You can easily tell that this black Challenger test car doesn’t appear dramatically different from a normal SRT8 model. The nose is hidden, but the overall shape and contours remain very familiar. Additional design tweaks, like a lower front apron and larger hood scoops, are likely to be more prominent on production versions. As for the name of this beast, Dodge has no shortage of nostalgic badges it could slap onto the flanks of this Challenger – though we highly doubt it will wear the upcoming Barracuda nameplate. That name is expected to grace a smaller and lighter replacement for the Challenger, most likely in 2015.

Dodge could always dust off the ‘Cuda badge from its discontinued Plymouth brand. Or it may simply call this a Supercharged Challenger. Whatever the case, we expect this all-American tire-smoking coupe to debut early next year, during the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

550hp from 470hp by adding a SC. I think it would(should) be rated 600hp at least.

They should just build Challenger SRT-10 concept with Viper's V10 engine.

But they won't be going supercharged on the 6.4 ... there's long been rumored a new 6.2 engine for the upcoming supercharged applications ...

I can't wait to see what they'll really officially rate the new engine at ... whether it'll be a true rating or not, time will tell.

The 6.1 was under-rated, the 6.4 is supposedly much closer to its true rating.

Ford under-rates some of their engines too, for whatever their reasons are .... btw.

Won't be a Challenger. Most likely the SRT Barracuda testing on the current platform. Rumors have it moving to a smaller, lighter platform and getting a hefty bump in power with a new motor.

This is what I want to be true, but just what platform will they use? I'm not aware of Fiat/Chrysler working on anything smaller. The only one that springs to mind is the smaller 4 door Maserati, due next year, but I'd imagine that's one expensive platform!

Oh, and does that bra make it look like the car is puckering up for a kiss?

There's a new platform, codename LA in the works. It'll be the first car on it, followed by several more in 2014 and beyond.

Take a look at Allpar. Probably one of the best resources on Chrysler info out there.
