Back-Up Camera Installed...
...In my wife's Jeep Commander.
I got my wife this Commander a few weeks ago, but you couldn't see out of the back, especially w/ the car seat in the middle or the third row of seats up.

This pic is with the 3rd row down. With it up, the rear headrests nearly touch the ceiling.

So, a little modding to the rescue. Stuck this camera on the back.

Then I had to modify the mirror mount to accept the new mirror.

With the camera off, it's a normal mirror. The little box is picked up by the camera flash, but virtually invisible under normal viewing.

When you shift into reverse, the image behind you is automatically displayed.

Nice little safety trick w/ a 2 year old. When you shift back into drive the lcd monitor powers down and it's back to a normal mirror. There's a button you can push to manually turn the monitor on if you want, and a thumbwheel to adjust the brightness. Also, you can add a camera to the headliner to monitor the kids in the backseats if you want and/or hook it up to a navigation system. Pretty cool if you ask me. What do you think?

Thanks!
Not any more difficult than the start button install.
Take off the interior trim panel of rear hatch and cut a small hole in the sheetmetal behind the black liftgate trim to pass the camera through. Camera mounts w/ 3m tape. Route and wrap wires through liftgate, to headliner, down C-pillar, across rocker panel, and up A-pillar to the mirror. The mirror is powered by tapping a 12v switched wire, the reverse lights wire, and a ground.
I scored a great deal on ebay, because MSRP is really high. http://www.rostra.com/RearSight-Universal.asp I don't know that I'd ever spend $750 on this, although the peace of mind for less likelyhood of child damage, Mustang damage, Jeep damage, shopping cart damage, etc... it still might be worth it the first time we save either someone's injuries/life or insurance deductibles.
Look around on the site and give them a call though to see if there's a less expensive model of the same thing... might not have the Nav inputs or something, but I swear I saw one somewhere for $260.

Nicely done John!
Our newest truck at teh fire department has this, granted its a 50,000lb tanker with a dedicated video screen for backing up, but the on/off feature based off gear selection is great.
