Be aware of the Motorcraft Syth-Blend 5Qt Jug
Hit 3,000 miles on the Pony today so I figured I'd do my oil change. I dig out the 5 Qt jug of the Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend and the 1 Qt bottle I picked up at Walmart 3 weeks ago.
After the old oil and filter were out, I crack open the 1 Qt bottle and pour it in. It's got that nice honey color to it. I then take the cap off the 5 Qt jug and get ready to pierce the foil protective cover with my car key when my thumb pierces the foil. I think to myself, "man, they are really getting cheap with this stuff! " I peel the rest of the foil off to avoid any pieces pouring into the engine. I then start to pour the oil into the car when I immediately notice the oil is fricken blacker than the oil I just drained out. Some ******#$%&er had the ***** to pour their old oil back into the jug and return it to Walmart!!!!
I took the other car and went back to Walmart and explained what had happened. I told them that I was so embarressed to even come to the customer service counter. I said I had a $37,000 car and why would I even try to do something like that to save $10. The only reason I went to the counter was the principle. Why should I have to be the one that's out $10 because of someone else's doing?? They were very good about giving me a new jug.
I noticed I could not puncture the foil with my thumb on the new bottle. After I got the foil off with my key, I compared it to the piece that came off the used oil bottle. I figured it out. They cut a circle out of Reynold's Wrap and glued it back on. Now I've seen everything.
Check the foil before you leave the store. If it tears easier than paper, don't buy it. You'd think you'd notice the dark oil on the transparent oil level indicator on the bottle. You can't really judge by that since even the bottle with the new oil looks dark.

I read (and post on) www.bobistheoilguy.com and I've read about this happening with the Castrol Syntec 0W-30 which is the German made Syntec, also known in that site as GC (German Castrol). That oil is only sold in AutoZone and perhaps O'Rileys (and in Canada, at WalMart). It is the only Group IV Full Synthetic PAO in the Syntec line as all the others are Group III Hydrocracked.
Well to get to the point, guys have found that sometimes, the quart bottles have been "opened". You can tell by the broken tab on the cap. I use that 0W-30 and I always look to make sure any bottles I buy have unbroken tabs on the caps. You can't be too carefull.

The 1 qt bottles have the lower security ring on the cap that breaks when you twist it, much like a plastic Coke bottle.
The caps on the 5 qt bottles don't have this, but rather have the foil seal across the bottle opening. Since the cap doesn't get damaged upon removal, they just put a new "Reynolds" foil on.
I guess it could have been worse in the sense that at least there was old motor oil in it. Can you imagine if they had filled it with something else that could have damaged the engine? I had poured about an ounce into the engine when I immediately stopped and wondered why it was jet black.

People who stoop to doing that are worse than pathetic.
