I have a friend with a 1999 C5. He loves the car. I know this is a Mustang site but some of you must know something about this car. What are your experiences, thoughts, or opinions?

Are you asking for opinions because you are interested in buying one or are you just curious as to the potential that his car has in a race?

I have only had a few hours of seat time in various C5s but I willl say that the car is nothing short of amazing. Loads of power, comfortable enough for everyday driving, lots of cool features, and it is leaps above the C4 in ride quailty and how quiet it is. The biggest and most noticeable change for me, from driving Mustangs everyday, is the breaks on the car. I'm still waiting to buy one actually so yes I would say I recommend the car.

They add new features and performance improvements almost every year so get the newest one you can afford. Examples: HUD, Active Handling, Mangetic Selective Ride Control,

Downsides: the interior is not going to satisfy you if you are looking for a luxery car, the exhaust is quiet from the factory, some of the 2001 Z06 models had an oil burning problem, many of the manual transmission models have the column lock problem, some of the models also had a fuel gage problem. (I actually had this happen on a test drive. We stopped to fill the car up and the HUD and gages kept flashing Low Fuel!)

No, I don't care about a race. I don't go to the track in my Mustang and I don't street race. I've been kicking around the idea of buying a used one (since this isn't stangnet I probably don't have to don my flameproof suit) and was just curious what, if any, thoughts you guys have.

I know the car is faster than an unmodified Mustang and handles better, and can get over 30 mpg on the highway, etc

Of course all the guys on the Corvette forums love them, just as we do our Mustangs, but I was hoping that a few objective car guys, as opposed to Mustang fanatics, might be able to give a fairly unbiased opinion, whatever it is.

This is the General Vehicle Discussion Forum, is it not?

Get one and let me drive it for a week a year as a way of repaying me for telling you to get it.
