I don't know I still don't see the quality in the imports at all. My wife is a Honda lover (I know, I know) but she still insist that the american market has better quality. Her dad's tundra is in my opinion and hers not as refined as the american market.

My take on the many factors causing the decline of the big 2.5:

* bad management decisions
* increasing healthcare costs for retirees & workers
* concessions to UAW that cut into profits
* increasing competition from Europe & Asia
* lack of desirable products/ old products (in the car segment; their trucks are doing very well)
* somewhat undeserved reputation for poor quality
* overhype of the imports' quality and reliablility


Another thing that is not mentioned is that GM and Ford are old, large companies and they are in "decline" stage of their life cycles. Nothing can keep growing and expanding forever. There are peaks and valleys. The Japanese and Korean automakers are much younger and are still in their growth stages. When they are as old as Ford and GM I believe they will have similar problems. Look at one of the oldest European automakers, Mercedes. Their quality is at an all time low and so are their growth and profits. But I don't expect them to go away anytime soon.

In the IT world, In the '90s IBM was in the stage of its lifecycle that GM is in now. They were able to stop the decline by downsizing, restructuring and rethinking their business and concentrating on services rather than hardware, thanks to some skillfull leadership. They are doing quite well today.

Ford is not in as bad shape as GM; they have new products in the car segment and seem to be moving away from the dependence on trucks/SUVs.

 

Fords new cars dont hit it with me, except the 500 of course and the mustang. the trucks are a main reason i like ford

300,000 miles, thats nothing! The voyager space probes were built in the USA back in the 70's and they have billions and billions of miles on them, probably a trillion miles by now. They already left the solar system. I don't see anything japanese going that far! and the voyagers travel at like 30,000 MPH, no rice burner will ever top that!

 

Ford should end this discussion by launching a 05 Mustang into space on top of a TITAN ICBM! nothing would ever beat the miles or speed of that car!
