Acura readies 286-hp TL Type S

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/06/a...-hp-tl-type-s/

The Boston Globe spilled the beans! For MY 2007, Acura has added a Type S model to the TL range. Those who opt for the package are rewarded with a 3.5L V6 churning out 286 horses and 256 lb.-ft. of torque, 28 hp and 23 lb.-ft. better than the base TL's 3.2L mill.

Subtle detail changes differentiate the Type -S from the standard car. A mesh grille, wheel/tire upgrade, rear spoiler, quad exhaust outlets and, of course, Type S badging identify it as such. Inside, the Type S gets sportier seating, carbon fiber trim, and racy steel pedals. A sport-tuned suspension is in place to give the car improved handling to go with its added punch. Expect a retail price of around $39,000.

If I were going to spend that much cash on a Japanese sports sedan, I'd buy the Lexus IS350. It's roughly the same price, has more power, and it's RWD.

Meh, I dunno. Stuff I like, stuff I definitely don't. The exterior leaves me a bit cold. The interior, on the other hand, is first rate.

I like the quad exhaust. Not really my kind of car.

Like front wheel drive? The TL would be a helluva car if weren't FWD. My last three cars have been FWD and I'm a bit sick of it. My next car will be either RWD or AWD.

If "roughly" you mean" over 8K higher, than sure. The IS is an interesting vehicle, but doesn't price the same as a TL similarly equipped.

If the TL were rear wheel drive I'm certain it would be a more popular car. But for the market it's aiming for it is a great ride. The comfort and quality of the interior and amazing sound system better cars at twice the price.

How are you getting $8K? I priced out an IS with all the options and it came to $41,139. The TL Type-S is estimated to sticker at $39,000. I'm not sure how you do your math but I don't get an $8K difference.

You just nailed the chief issue right there. I've driven the new TL, and the torque steer is something to behold - talk about bunny-hopping!

Also: I'm finding that the styling is dating fast...there are too many of them on the road...the 286 HP is no longer class-defining (more like bringing up the rear)...and the new Type-S wheels are horrid.

All that said, engine REFINEMENT and drive train smoothness are first rate, the car is very well equipped, and as someone else here said, the interior is tremendous, and compares well with cars costing much more.

Thought you were comparing the IS to the TL. Note I said TL, not TL-S.

Think the TL-S would not be a market winner. Everyone I speak with that owns a TL did not buy it because it tears up the road. It does a decent job of delivering some power - the torque steer is minimal, despite those of us used to RWD, it is only an issue on wet roads - but it's selling point is the refinement for a car at that price. Don't see extra power adding to sales.

Well, the whole thread is about the TL-S so I'm not sure why you thought I would compare to the TL. Just a mis-communication I guess.

An attempt at an aggressive looking 4 door. Some companies do it okay (BMW) and others not so well. I personally like the look of the standard TL better. Who wants a boy racer looking $40,000 4 door?

there's not much I don't like about my TL. One of the best cars I have ever owned. There is some tq steer but not much. Makes it more fun to drive lol I was surprised they were working to make the car have less. It will run darn close to the GT 04 and under from a rolling start.
