I would normally have a winter car but since I just moved from the west coast, money is tight so I'll be cruising into winter in my 05 GT until I can afford a beater. I've got an appointment to have it Krowned (rustproofed) and I'll be wrapping the interior in heavy plastic to avoid salt damage to the carpets. Also need to look into a set of snow tires for the rear... do they make 17" snows?

So... am I going to be the only one slip-sliding around in my 'stang once the snow flies?

 

If I didn't drive it once it got cold out, I'd be in the garage most of the year

Yup, I'll be driving it. Blizzaks are on the stock rims and I'll probably switch over in the next 2-3 weeks. Get the 235 55 R17 Blizzaks, they are really good

Winter tires do make a big difference.

You should get a set of four winter tires. The performance is unbalanced if you only have rears. For keeping control in winter conditions, it is just as important to be able to steer and brake as accellerate.

Also don't forget when you are riding on snows you are not wearing your summer tires, so although they may seem expensive, you are saving by not replacing your summer tires as soon or as often.

However, winter tires for the Mustang are not cheap.
The off-brands do not offer them in 17"

For the 235/55 series, your best bet is Michelin X-Ice at $226 each (list of $325).
Blizzaks would be more at $261 each, and not as good a tire.
They are "W" rated not "Z", which means you can only go up to 270km/h.

It is a good idea to get an extra set of wheels for the winter tires, but for the first year, with budget considerations, I would just switch tires.

 

I drove mine last year on Michelin X-Ice tires. Man, those tires were awesome. I will be storing it this year, but the ironic part is I will still be putting the snow tires on it.

 

I'm gonna store mine this winter. I'm lucky to have a winter vehicle at my disposal and I can put some money into that rather than spend it on snows.

 

Every review I've seen (including TireRack's multiple reviews) has put the Blizzaks ahead of the X-Ice, though both are top notch.

I have Blizzaks so I know they are good. The X-Ice tire has shallower treads than the blizzaks though they look like they would do very well with a brushing or in icy conditions.

i drove my old 02 GT for 2 winters on fierstone firehawk svx m+s tires 225/55/16 (OEM tires on 94/95 stangs with 16" wheel) - no problems with the amount of snow we get in the GTA

i also drove my old 88 GT 5.0 for 7 winter on four snow tires/steel wheels - no problems

 

There's tons of RWD cars that drive through the winter. Sure, not many can put down 275rwhp but that's a matter of taking it easy on the ol' go plank

What's this Krown stuff you guys are talking about, is it a do it your selfer or can you only get it done at a shop, or only at a toronto area shop? And what does it cost, cause i gotta drive mine too and this will be it's first winter, so i'd like to keep it rust free.

My dad gets his cars undercoated at a shop. Just look it up in the yellow pages. should be "undercoating"

 

Best rustproofing available IMO. Check out their webpage and click under shop info on the left to search for the closest location.

Thanks, that looks pretty good. But ummm... what's the cost? I'm a student and ther aint exactly a lot rollin around.

I don't plan on running the car in the winter. will just store it in my garage...if there's a nice day I may take it out but else it'll go away once the salt hits.

i'll have a winter car to use for Dec & January and a GO train/TTC pass for Feb/March....by april the snow should be gone (god willing!).

Actually every year.....but you are warrantied against rust

 

I've had no problems with the X-ice tires. Had to get to work last year after 8" fell overnight, no problems driving in the snow.
