Yet another 4.6 3v tick forum

Hello all!

at first I assumed it might just be the normal 3v injector tick but my noise is louder then what the injector noise is described to be. I have a tick when on the throttle in low rpm (2k ish) up to around 3k rpm. After 3000+ I assume it’s gone or my exhaust drains it out. This tick is throttle dependent and is really loud in 5th gear when the rpm is low and closer to 2000rpm. Off the gas you don’t hear it, slighty throttle it’s slightly present, and heavier throttle it gets louder through that 2-3k rpm band. I’ve had this noise prior to doing any mods, now here I am intake, long tubes, and cams later and it’s still around. I thought it was an exhaust leak but after doing headers and going over everything it’s clear that it is not. When I thought it may be timing related and or follower/lasher related I decided to do hot rod cams at the same time. After changing all the lashers, rockers, phasers, cams and full timing I still have this same noise. I don’t think I hear it at idle, all I really hear is cam noises, but I do still here it when low rpm around town. My car runs perfectly fine the noise just drives me crazy. Maybe it’s normal but I don’t have anybody with a 3v to compare my car to there’s. I just feel like this noise is a lot louder then the normal 3v noises but I could be crazy. Thanks again!

p.s I did have a clutch, TOB, flywheel change due to mileage and wear a few months ago as well, but the noise was there with the stock clutch. I’m pretty sure it’s from the motor as it sounds way ahead of me, and not from the trans.

Need to Find Someone with Similar Stang and Compare! Maybe Go to the Next Car show in your Area and Find Someone willing to Help! A Youtube Video Would be Helpful for Online Help!

yes I 100% agree. Like it’s not super loud, if you have the radio at a mild volume it drains it out. It’s just low volume or off it’s super obvious and kinda gets on my nerves. I’m not quite sure if video would pick up the sound only because of the circumstances that cause it. Maybe slightly but I will keep digging online to see if I find anything similar. Thank you

You may also want to consider searching the sub-forums by selecting the search function menu above... When the search menu drop down window displays, type in 3v engine tick... You should then come across a listing of threads submitted which directly address the 3v engine tick issues... The ticking sounds have also been related to cam phasers going bad, so you may want to consider having them diagnosed

ive done that recommendation and everything says phasers, timing, or lasher/follower failure. I’ve replaced all of this within the last month and it did not solve it. That’s why I’m starting to assume it’s something else or it’s normal operation noise. To me it just seems a little extra noisy to be injectors

For additional piece of mind, I would then recommend taking your car to your nearest Ford dealership and have a Ford technician run a complete diagnostic system test.. That way you'll know for certain what is causing the ticking noises and if any parts may require replacement
