I thought it would be interesting to run a parallel poll to one which is posted on camaroz28.com.
The poll asks if Camaro came back without the Camaro name...how would that affect buying habits.

How would the Mustang enthusiast react to Mustang coming back....without the Mustang name?

 

Didn't Ford already do that...With the Probe??? and look where that is today...

 

Unlike Camaro fans, we dont have to make that decision

They already got stuck with a very un-GTO car.

 

I will not vote yet, as I expect (demand?) more options than just "yes" or "no." This is a democracy after all, right? (which is why "people" (not individuals nessecarily(sp?)) only want two parties from which to present candidates for president in America, yes? I mean, how dare anyone else present a candidate for President except to "steal" votes from the main two parties... uh... I digress... but only a little... I mean, it's semi related... maybe I'll just be quiet now...)

Um, but yeah, something like "SAME car, different name" or "different car, same name" or "same shape, different drivetrain (FWD)" etc, adnausem.

Oh forget it. My vote is maybe. :-)

 

For me, the name is a plus. The Mustang fits all my needs. Its a sweet looking car with a lot of power. But, it is also affordable, can sit four people reasonably well, and has a usable trunk.

So, if Ford for some reason dropped Mustang and brought it back as another car...I'd get it if it had the same qualities.

 

B) Let's see over the years ; I've driven Mustangs, Dodge R/T, Cuda, Dodge Magnum, XKE, Corvette, Chevelle SS, Camero RS & Z, T-Bird, Galaxie, Cadillac, Sprts Fury III, 4Runner, Camry, Tundra, T&C Mini-van to name a few and leaving the motorcycles for another place.
From hot rods to soccer Moms; only a couple had anything to do with the name. They were bought for necessity, reliability, hobby/restoration and because I like the car as an enthusiast; name is less relevant. You only recognize the name because of the auto’s popularity or it's style/performance resonates within you as what you really like.

 

If the mustang was the same car it has been for 40 years, but with a different name I would love it the same. We would then be here today saying if it wasnt called X name if we would buy it.

 

If it is not called a Mustang, you lose all the charcter things on the car, the horse, the taillights, the side scallop..

it would have to be an interesting, attractive package to get my interest. Part of the reason I love the Mustang is the image that has been cultivated for 40 years

Well I said if the name was different but the car was 100% the same, meaning the little horse could still be there. It doesnt matter, its called the Mustang.

 

Ford wouldn't do that, so what's the point in calling it something else?

 

Well, if had 3 verticle taillights on the back on each side, and was called a Cobra, or GT350, or Boss, or Mach 1, GT-281, Bullitt......

Of course all these tie into Mustang heritage. I don't know. If it was the same car and called the Ford Falcon, Torino, or Probe, it wouldn't be the same. But it still would provide one heck of a bang for the buck.

 

Call it a Pinto...I'd buy a 300 HP Pinto if it looks that good! Mr. Shakespear said it best: "A rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet"...or something like that.

Just think, maybe we've all been driving Pintos, only Ford calls them Mustangs?

In 1991 I got my grandparent's 68' when they bought a new PROBE GT (almost our worst Mustang mistake)

 

and what if that name was CAMARO
I would have still hated it...LOL

 

Come on now do you think that Ford will ever get rid of the Mustang name they already tried that with the Probe and we fought that one off. Just think of what it would be like if the Mustang turned into a 4cyl FWD car. I would never buy it I would have bought a new F-150 or something like that

 

That was sort of the opposite situation, calling a car that was, in character, something very different, a "Mustang." The Probe, as fine a car as it was, was NOT a Mustang.

Sadly for the Probe, Ford just sort of let it whither on the vine, which, in the highly competitive sports coupe market, it tantamount to death, which is what happened.
