Will the Mazda6 Switchblade key work for Mustangs?

A couple of months ago while my Mustang was at the body shop being repaired after being "keyed",
I had a 2008 Mazda6 rental. It had a key like this:

Which folds up and springs out like a switchblade. The key shank looks like a standard Ford double sided design and the remote buttons are exactly like a Ford (lock, unlock, trunk release, panic).

My theory is this: since the Mazda6 and S197 roll down the same assembly line, and have the same door handles and locks, wouldn't it make sense that they would use compatible remote transmitter & transponder circuitry, since they would use the same equipment to program them at the plant? I have no idea if that's how it's done at the factory; I'm just throwing this out there.

It looks like the physical key would work for a Mustang or any Ford, and if the remote & transponder would work as well, then maybe this would be a nice alternative to the Fusion key.

Interesting, I know many people are using the ford Fusion keys why are a key/fob combo, however, I would prefer a one piece, spring loaded like the one you posted.

I would ask KC, he would probably know best.

I used to use the fusion keyfob until it broke. I would love to find out if this works.

If anything Ford should have given us something better than a 10+ year old design in keys, but that's another thread

It looks like it would cost about $50 to find out for sure... That would be VERY nice. If it does work, I think I'll have to pick one up as my main key. The less junk, the better!

I just tried to insert a 2005 Mazda 6 key (a used one we have on the lot here, but not a switchblade key), into a new 2009 Mustang GT500 ingition slot. NO GO. The key looks similar, but the pattern is different to the point it won't let it go all the way into the ignition. Maybe a newer key would work, but I do know a 2005 won't work.

Maybe it's because how the key was cut ?

No it wasn't that at all (I know better ). The blank itself is different. The part where it curves in, is different compared to a Mustang key that I had. I've had Taurus (nee 500) keys go into a ignition of a Fusion, but it won't turn. Its because the blanks are the same, but the cut is different. On the 6 vs the Mustang, the blank itself is different.
