On my way home from work tonight I decided to put it in 5th in a 45 mph zone. Yeah, It drove ok but it drove me nuts that I had no torque under my foot.
Although I could probably get a few more miles per gallon if I practiced this but I just can't do it. Is anyone hear me on this ?? or am I crazy???

If I'm taking it easy, I'll be in 5th by 40. Still plenty of torque for lazy around town driving (I can now average 22mpg mixed city/highway)

I go to 5th usually at about 45, under that it usually feels like it's lugging.

For me, anything under 44 in 5th and the engine seems to lug a bit. I usually downshift to 4th at anything under 48.

The owners manual offers ridiculous suggestions for obtaining optimum fuel efficiency. If you followed their advice, you'd be in 5th gear by the time you reach 40 mph. In fact, the Mustang has so much get-up-and-go, that if you obeyed their shift points, your hand would be a blur as you row through the gears!

I personally enjoy squeezing as much as I can out of each gear. Sure the fuel economy isn't what it could be, but brother it sounds sweet.

Since I have the auto, it will go into 5th as low as 35 m.p.h, talk about chug a lug. The O/D off button works well though

That's right about where I go into 5th, 55-60. Nothing less or it feels to low for the motor. I still get 17.8 in the city! So I'm not complaining at all.

Ditto on this. Even though it's an 8, it's only a 281. If you had 400ci+ under the hood, under 45mph 5th would be possible.

Me too. But if I get in an area with hills, I have to go back to 4th.

When I had my focus I always shifted to 5th as soon as I was done accelerating. Even as low as 30 mph. This came from learning stick on a similar car, 95 Escort. But I find myself staying in 4th with this car and not realizing it. The engine is just turning so much slower in 5th than I'm used to.

Though I usually shift to 5th around 35, if i'm just going along at the same speed.
