A Wheel Story: Bullitt to SN-95 to GT500
I finally got new summer tires and had them mounted on the '07 GT500 take-off wheels that I bought locally during the winter. Here is my story...
I bought my '05 GT used in the winter of '08-09 and it came with brand new 235/55 Goodyear Eagle RS-A's on the factory 17" Bullitt wheels. With the full tread on these all season tires, the car was actually OK in the snow.
However, being OK in the snow while brand new does not define a good tire. In fact, I would say that the RS-A's are garbage and would hope that ya'll have the common sense not to put these on your cars.
I'm not made of money, so unfortunately I had these tires on my car for the entire summer of '09. Fortunately, I wasn't concerned with longevity, so I roasted them often. When the wet and cold fall weather arrived, the rears were about half worn but fully useless. I scored a great deal on winter tires, and had a set of General Altimax Artic 215/60/17's installed on the Bullitt wheels. Meanwile, I also scored an amazing deal on a load of '07 GT500 take-off parts. Wheels, strut tower brace, sill plates, springs, struts, sway bars, shifter, shift ****, mufflers...all for $500.
The Generals were great in Canadian winter...maybe not the best snow tire I've ever had but they make the S197 fun and confident and bang for the buck, they are incredible.
Bonus: I posted the used RS-A's for sale and quickly sold them to a guy with a Grand Prix, 'nuff said.
Here we are, spring 2010. Everything is set, right? I've got quality winter tires mounted on the factory 17"s and a sweet set of 18"s ready for summer rubber...except I happen to purchase my first home this spring and I want to wait until everything closes to make sure I have enough cash before I spend money on new tires for the GT500 wheels...
Of course, the warm weather comes early...
So, to save the winter tires and just for fun, I mounted my summer wheels and tires from my previous Stang onto the '05...knowing it would only be for a week or two.
Then, finally, I got this sorted out...
245/45/17 vs. 275/40/18
