What's S197?

It isn't the chassis name. Its the codename for the car or series of cars. The 05 is built on the LS platform, albeit heavily modified. The SN95 or S197 comes from the ford codename for the car.

I will try to post it and scan later.

Thats exactly how I read (pg 22) it in the "Mustang A New Breed of Pony Car 2005" by Matt DeLorenzo. S197 is the codename though.

I can scan articles that say it IS the modified LS. And its from either C&D or MT. I'd trust them over a Mustang only mag.

While the Mustang, LS and Jag S share many components, the Mustang differs in key areas...

Didn't we discuss this on another thread a while back that the S197 Mustang chassis was an entirely new chassis compared to the DEW98 that the LS, T-bird, and Jag were using? They were similar, but Ford decided to ditch the DEW98 and go with an entirely new chassis to accomodate the bigger 4.6L V8 as opposed to the 3.9L and also to utilize several differnt suspension components as well. From what I also recall, although it is a new chassis, they still do share some components.

Since Team Mustang engineers are often directly quoted and contribute articles to the Mustang Times content, I would tend to accept the information there as more accurate than C&D or Motor Trend.
As Donna corroborates, the new Mustang book also makes mention of the platform's origins. And as 03muzzy6 mentions, I thought I recalled the discussion about this as well.
PS - I also was corresponding with one of the Mustang engineers on the term "D2C", another one of those trivia points. He was unaware of that term being used to describe the chassis.
PPS - Sorry for being a TCA (three-character acronym) geek.

Some of you guys are confusing project names with platform names.
D/EW-98 = Platform designation used on Jag S type, Lincoln LS & 2 seat T-Bird.
D2C = Platform designation for 2005+ Mustang.
The Mustang does NOT share its platform with the Lincoln LS. D2C was heavily inspired by D/EW-98, but it is a separate platform (Yes Grantsdale I can provide quotes from HTT that say exactly that). Somewhere I read that the 2005 Mustang uses only 6 parts in common with the Lincoln LS, that is NOT platform sharing.
As others have said S197 is the project code for the 2005 Mustang.
S= Sporty Car
197 = serial project #
For the last Mustang SN95
S = Sporty Car
N = North America
95 = serial project #
For D/EW98
D = mid-size sedan
E = large sedan
W = Worldwide
98 = Serial Project #
D/EW-98 = Platform designation used on Jag S type, Lincoln LS & 2 seat T-Bird.
D2C = Platform designation for 2005+ Mustang.
