What's the best new head unit???

I know there has been some discussion on here about aftermarket head units and so forth. I was wondering in your opinions what is the best head unit. I'm looking for dvd, sirius, ipod, and also the ability to throw pics on there. I have a shaker 1000 so it has to be compatible with my subs. Any thoughts? How difficult is installation?

Count me in as interested too. I'm a little leary about getting a new head unit because of the Shaker1000 subs. Is anything compatible with or without NAV? I'm looking for plug and play type compatible and the factory NAV unit is too much work with the antenna installation and all that you have to remove to get it under the dash.

I'm high on the AVIC-D3 that Scothew is installing in PSH right now. It's got just about everything you'd ever need:
  • DVD/CD player with GPS navigation
  • 6.1" LCD video screen with touchscreen controls
  • Plays CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs, DVD-R/RWs, DivX, AAC, WMA, and MP3 discs
  • 3-band parametric EQ
  • 5 preset EQ curves
  • AM/FM tuner
  • 18 FM/6 AM presets
  • XM and SIRIUS satellite radio-ready (you can add satellite radio for under $100, plus subscription)
  • Plays both audio and video from iPod ($20 cable required)
  • front auxiliary input for audio and video devices
  • CD changer controls
  • audio/video input
  • rear-view camera input (free camera at Crutchfield right now!)
  • video output
And it's just $1000!

It got a bad review because there is only one disc slot, so you can't listen to a CD while you get navigation directions. I think people are really overreacting to that.
  • Once the system has planned your route, you can remove the disc and insert your CD.
  • How often do you use navigation? Most days I go from my house to work and back. I know that route pretty well.
  • It's got a very easy and cheap iPod hookup with on-screen controls. What are the odds that you'll want to listen to a CD that you haven't put on your iPod while obtaining navigation assistance? Minimal at best!

Hey Brad, this will work no prob with the factory shaker 1000? Did you purchase additional harnesses? I really like this system.

You'll need a wiring harness and dash kit. Those two things plus the iPod cable cost me $71 including shipping.

I don't know about the Shaker 1000 swap.

with the right harness (i.e: Metra 70-5521) you should be able to power the factory amps and subs from any after market head units.
you might need to add a voltage regulator on the line outs to reduce the output to 5V in order to avoid the power-on pop coming from the subs.

What did you swap out Brad? Shaker500 or the base head unit?

Crutchfield does put this on their list of units compatible with the factory installed Shaker1000 but they don't give much more info on what it takes to make it all work.

Is there an antenna for the NAV and where does it go if there is?

I purchased the Kenwood 6160. It is Nav/sat/dvd/ipod/phone. The thing does everything but drive the car. I could not be happier
