For a car like a Focus, I'd say you would lose money trying to sell it or trade it in. For a car like a Mustang GT, it depends on the region as well. One guy said he traded in his 05 GT with 25k miles about 2 years after he bought it and only lost $5,000 in the process. He turned the original rear tires bald and powershifted that thing into the low 13s (13.2?) bone stock w/ the manual.
In NYC or Northeast NJ, where people don't like or care about manuals, you may lose money even on a manual GT.

Up here some dealers are still charging AMD on base Manual GT Mustangs.
Maybe it's because we live within an hour of an International Speedway and an NHRA track, but it seems many of the drivers up here like manuals.
My sister (over 50) has never owned an auto.

I stole my Focus used for about $1500 less than I should have paid for it, simply because people in the DC area refuse to buy stick shifts.

I had a hard time choosing between a Focus ST and the Mustang GT. In the end I didn't care much for the 4-banger and FWD drivetrain but it would have made a great grocery getter/commuting car though. Hopefully the next Mk 3 Focus in the US will get more power!

a big part of me wanted a standard car but at the time the ford dealers around me did not have standards and the only dealer that did had 3 and they were S281SC Saleens so i was not ready for that kind of price tag, then i saw my car and it was auto, sure i was a bit disappointed but i know with a few mods this car will be better then a standard and i am glad Doug and other tuners have us auto guys covered with some awesome tunes

Driving both- I prefer my auto. I admit I am quite lazy, and it is so much easier just to throw it in gear and go. I use my car 99% of the time.

BUT when I want to have fun, I take the manual out.

Finding a manual v6 was a huge PITA though- It took me a good year and a half(I only shop one ford dealer) to find one in a color my husband liked to show up on the lot.

It'd be nice if we could have both... a fully functional manual or an automatic at a flip of the switch. I'd be willing to pay an extra $500-$1000 for this feature.

Two weeks ago i traded my '05 GT "auto" in on a '07 GT/CS "manual". I have been driving autos for the last 30 years. I have to admit, this manual is a blast to drive, i just hope it stays fun.

Still as time goes on you will find less people that know how to drive a manual car, that and given the fact that most of driving anymore consists of two things 1. sitting in traffic and 2. moving in traffic. Still I understand why this would bother some as it is harder to find a manual then an Auto and dealers are still giving people a hard time about ordering a manual.

What ever happened to give the people what they want ? No it

that will be 1,00.00 plus more and you will take and like an automatic or that's just too bad seems to fit ! Like where I got my car they said we will no longer order a vert with a vinal top all tops will be ordered as cloth Are there not standards that some things just not be forced upon us ?

Thats what I'm sayin...give the people what they want. Obviously people want more manual V8's, since there are a TON of '06 V8 Autos left on dealer lots, and not a single '06 V8 manual to be found. I understand underestimating demand, but come on Ford...did you really think you would sell more autos than manuals in this car?? and if you did, you have had about 2.5 years of production to figure it out. And if it is a supply problem, getting enough manual trannies from Tremec, come on Ford...start kicking some butt around the tremec round table!! Talk about slow learning curve.

I guess Ford just figures they will sell more autos than manuals, so thats what they make. These Mustangs are in such demand that people will settle for an auto when they really want a manual because that is what is available. If I was ready to buy a new 'Stang and I had to have it TODAY, I would probably end up with an Auto and not be as happy with it. Sad Ford, just sad.

Very good luck finding a manual v6- its nearly impossible. Ours was a base model with no options on it(making it mod heaven and he indeed has the mod bug), and it took forever to find that.
When I got my car it was in the first load of mustangs to arrive here near me in 2004, and they had no manuals anywhere(plus my husband bought me one before I showed up to [pick it, best Christmas ever so I wasn't going to complain).

I gotta say though- sitting in traffic with a manual is a total PITA, and sometimes I forget I am in his car and manage to stall out. BUT on the open road it is a blast to drive- plus it handles better in wet weather than my no ABS or TC car does.

We need 3 feet and 3 hands:

1 foot for each pedal, 2 hands for the steering wheel, 1 for the shifter and beverages.

+1 . I debated long and hard before purchasing my former '05 and went with the auto as it was my daily driver and commute traffic is ugly around here. A stick gets to be a pain (literally) in bumper-to-bumper commutes. I have driven FAR more miles with a stick over the years than an auto, so I speak from experience.

When I sold the '05 (to raise the downpayment for a house), I drove my old Dakota with a stick for a year or so before buying my current '06. When the time came to do a "do over" and purchase my '06, I went with the auto again and don't regret it. The only things I did differently was went with Performance White instead of Redfire and standard Bullitts instead of the machined upgrade wheels.

If my GT were a weekend car and not a daily driver, I would have gone with the stick. But I don't understand the hate on us who go with the auto. by some posters. We have our reasons.

I drive my manual every day in rush hour traffic and it's fun. I like it better than an automatic since I have to pay attention and clutch/shift properly, rather than space out and just push the "go pedal". A manual involves the driver much more in the act of driving; an automatic allows the driver to eat lunch, drink a latte, talk on the cellphone, put on makeup....
