I ran some Amsoil 0-30 in mine for a while, it didn't seem to make much difference in performance or anything. I had oil anylsis done and it was fine. Nothing abnormal metal wise, so I know it wasn't doing any damage to the engine. I still didn't like the 30 part being thicker than called for, just didn't seem right.
I'm sure once you point it out to them, they will drain and refill for you no charge. Their mistake. You could always ask for your next oil change to be free, since you have to bear the burden of bringing the car back for something that never should have happened. All a tech has to do is plug into the computer what your car is and it will tell him what oil to use.

In countries that do not use 5W-20 (pretty much almost everyone other than the United States), you'll have to use a 5W-30 or 0W-30 in the 4.6L 3V V8. The engines were designed to run on 5W-30 but Ford USA needs to boost their CAFE so in goes the 5W-20. Don't believe the BS about "high tech" engines, "tight clearances" and "close tolerances" requiring 5W-20. Nothing changed in the modular engine, that would require a thinner oil, from 2000 to 2001 when the spec was changed. Ford Australia gets its engine parts from Ford NA engine plants, and Ford Australia still specifies the use of 5W-30 in the Boss 260 (5.4L 4V V8 used in the Falcon XR8, makes 350 hp naturally aspirated).
I ran nothing but xW-30 in the 2003 5.4L 2V V8. The only time it used 5W-20 was from the factory and I dumped that at 500 miles. The oil cap clearly says "5W-20", but now that the warranty is out anyhow, I can tell people that my engine survived using 5W-30.![Smile](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The VCT is a bit different though. If you must use a 30 weight oil, go with a synthetic 0W-30 or 5W-30. Don't try a 10W-30. Hemi owners have found that their MDS goes haywire if you use too thick of an oil (10W-30). The VCT uses engine oil to operate, so I would suspect the same thing can happen.

Metroplex: good input and good to know. I called the Dealer back (as my Invoice states "5.5 5-30") regarding my GT's first oil change. They claim that the correct oil (5w-20) went in the car... it's just the paperwork is wrong (stating their 'computer' always defaults to "5.5 5-30", the the advisor needs to change it to "6.0 5-20" before printing invoice). Also stated their oil is stored/dispensed in bulk (not sure how this is supposed to make me feel better... an intern can easily grab the wrong bulk hose!)..and they decide which oil to dispense based on the oil cap! They only offered to have me stop by and they would change the paperwork! I'd rather know/verify what oil actually went in the car vs. having them cover their paperwork a$$. Live and learn.... doing all my own oil changes from now on.

Don't worry too much about it, it won't hurt your engine. I would just change it a little early so the oil doesn't have a chance to thicken any more than it already is. Maybe 3K rather than 5K miles. And +1 on changing your own oil, it's so easy on these cars!! Best investment I ever made in the garage was a set of ramps. WAY easier than a floor jack and jack stands!!

Generally accepted practice is that you top off the car so that the dipstick reads full on the upper mark.
The stang takes about a 1/2 quart more than specified.
As far as making jiffy lube drain out the extra half quart. That mechanic must have the patience of a saint. The extra 1/2 qt cannot hurt anything. Especially if the dispstick was not reading over at all or not by much.

It may look a little low...but 6 qts (with oil filter change) is what the manual says...also, never, never, allow someone else to change your oil...trust no one...
