Question

One of the first mods I did was to get a 14" antenna....that F-150 sized one had to go....

anywho....was looking at Brad's most excellent timeline....I saw pics of several Shelby's that had "rear" mounted antenna's. Then I remembered in the late 70's and early 80's everyone was doing that....<Boink!>.....Wonder how that would look on the 05 (yeah...the big hole up front would be a PITA to glass-over and paint). :bang:

Just a late night 4 beer idea'r.....

Inputs?

Kinda off topic, but you would have the link to the shorty antenna. I have seen several people mention it.

I'm afraid with the elctric option and the planned UD pulleys for my car that I would drain the battery...

No but like I PM'd the guy above...it can be a generic kit...as long as it fits. Seems to me the last time I looked there were about 10 different versions. Power Ant is cool...but it would have to be a simple switch on/ant up - switch off/ant down...I don't think the shaker has output for a power ant.

I always thought that if we couldn't get the antenna in the glass or something, that the best place would have been on the rear fender.

That said... it is too much effort IMO to move it.

IMO all vehicles should have the antenna integrated into the rear window. My 02 Altima had that... great reception and no ugly antenna.

I'm fine with the antenna up front - thought I wish it was retractable. I had to replace the one in my Camry and bought a generic power one for $44 - It wasn't too bad to install - 3 wire setup (12V +, Ground, and Signal from the headunit or amp) - If I knew how to get to the one in the stang, I'd love to put one too.

Shorty Antennas
I have installed a 9inch shorty, no problem with reception in the city or down the Cape. I tried the 14 the 9 and the 6, decided the 9 "looked right". Picked it up at a local truck custom shop, 23.00. Had the choice of black or billet aluminum. Guy at the shop said he could special order some custom colors, showed me red, yellow and blue. Did not ask if there was an additional cost or what the wait time would be.

As for a power option, Radio Shack sells a 40.00 cheapie, which you can wire to a toggle or to a radio "switched on" lead. Easy mod can be removed from any Lincoln TC, Merc GR. Marq, or Ford CVic, and wired in. Early 80's Lincolns had a "ANT" switch and bezel under the dash. Can't recall p/ns; but should be "junk yard available". Wiring is simple: ground, with "switched power" (up/down with key on/off) or radio "switched power" up/down with radio on/off. Last option is to wire it hot from a fused source, to a toggle.

Two observations about the Stangs antenna -

1) it has (at least in the DC area) the best reception of any car stereo system I have ever heard. There are some low power stations in Annapolis and Baltimore that don't even come in on most home systems and I was hearing them loud and clear on the mustang - pretty impressive.

2) while "shorty" antennas might look better I know of at least one friend, a mechanic, who had a eye-sight affecting experience with one. I've always thought that one of the reasons for the height of car antennas was to prevent someone from catching one in the eye when they are bending over that part of the car - I know it seems unlikely but I've managed to poke myself in the cheek more then once while polishing up a car with a shorty (had a car detailing business long ago) and, as stupid as it makes you feel, it doesn't make it any less dangerous - just something to think about.

oh, and

3) a billet aluminum piece on a new stang does sound real nice - love to see a pic if anyone goes that way.

My 79 Hurst/Olds had it in the windshield. Looked cool and worked fine.

I think the only reason that they don't do it on all cars is because it is more expensive.

Can't cost all that much more - they are already putting the lines on the glass for the defroster - the antenna is just a few more lines. The antenna lead to the radio is a few feet longer. Just my opinion.

I got mine from a wholesaler up here in Canada. They don't have a list of retailers on their website, but here's there contact info. I imagine they can steer you in the right direction.
