Went to pick it up and there's a big scratch

I found a Mustang over the weekend at a local dealership and went to buy it today. I looked the car over thoroughly on Saturday and didn't bother again today before doing all the paperwork. I haven't handed over any money yet-I was supposed to bring a check and pick it up in the A.M. I went to take another look and there was a long scratch on the passenger side door. It's a CS and the tape stripe is also ripped and gouged. After I looked it over again, I noticed an imperfection in the paint on the trunk-looks like two dark lines about the size of a thumbnail. The salesperson said the scratches would be taken care of but I assume the tape stripe will have to be ordered. I'm more concerned with the scratch though.
Any advice?

My advice is find a different car. That's a bad start. Sure others have been worse, but I'd want it new, not good as new.

+1 I agree, unless they knocked off a whole lot on the price. I still would have to think about it. I would look for something else.

+1 Yep, you need to be 100% happy with the car. Don't settle for something you are not entirely satisfied with.

Yeah! What they all said. Even though you may be satisfied with the repair work, in the back of your mind you will always be thinking about it. I guess it all depends on how **** you are in life. Me, my blood pressure about boils when something happens to one of my vehicles. Some guys will say to live with it... that it's not worth getting upset over. Personally, I think those guys are nuts.

Well, I don't think they'll knock anything off since it was XPlan. I don't think it will require a repaint. It was big but not that deep. As for the imperfection on the trunk I don't think that could be fixed. This dealership said they can't order another one though, because they've already gotten their allocation.

Eh, I would find a new car. Or demand a discount. I got my '08 factory ordered for several hundred below X-plan, so it's not unheard of to get something discounted below X-plan/invoice.

definately find another one or order one. I wouldn't want a car that had been repainted from the get-go.

Your call, but make sure they know before you drive off the lot if they break the paint you a written warranty for their work, not Ford's warranty.

Get another one...this has happened to me a couple of times...so whenever I pick up a new car...I tell them to wash it, but don't put a buffer to it (I will do my own wax work). Secondly, just before I sign on the dotted line I take one last look to ensure there are no scratches, dings, etc.
However, on this one (06 GT) I later found a defect in the passenger rear quarter glass...sticking out at one corner (glass later replaced) and one slight indentation up on the rear quarter panel near the rear spoiler (fixed by paintless dent repair)....
Always be wary! In this case, if the scratch is deep enough, they will have to repaint...just get another one and DON'T drive it off the lot.
Of course, living in NJ you should be more worried about the fuel jockey at the service station putting a scratch in the side of your car near the fuel door (hehehehehehehehehe)...NJ needs to go to "self-serve!"

If it bothers you now you it will always bother you. My 07 Grabber Orange that I traded had a scratch on the roof that had been touched up and also it looked as if the molding had been replaced above the drivers window. Also someone spilled a line of glue on the drivers mirror before I picked the car up. When I asked they said it happened during truck delivery. Every time I walked by the car it bothered me so I bought full painted mirror covers in orange and I thought they enlarged the the mirrors too much in that color, so I took em off.

You will always look at that spot where the damage is and see an imperfection, no matter how well they fix it.

I would find a new dealership you never know what those marks on the trunk were caused from, could be nothing, a major accident and bad bodywork/ paint, or weathering. No legit dealer would leave a car like that on the lot.
