The entire time I was reading the original post, I kept thinking to myself, wow I'd like to have an 87 corvette as a daily driver and free to boot. Then I realized that's not the type of vette
If it was a free Corvette I still wouldn't have taken it

I just picked up a 1987 Nova as my beater. It feels good not to have to worry about where I park, or if someone opens their door and dings the crap out of the stang.

Yeah, I want to do the same thing but I doubt I will do it. Probably just keep a cover on it at work to protect the paint, that's my biggest concern

'05's won't be a classic until 2030 may as well drive the snot out of it now. Give somebody something to restore in 2040. 17,486 miles since November.

Thats great. Heck, whatever protects the pony works for me.
I have a '93 Lumina that is actually my wifes old car.
We've had it for 10 years and its been through 3 kids.
I just got a new job and my commute is 140 miles/day.

I have a 91 Escort as my daily driver.

She is ugly and slow but she gets good mileage.

By the way I started calling her "the pinto" and the name stuck. Now my daughter comes to the window of her Moms house to see if I'm driving the Mustang or the Pinto.

Just cracks me up

I recently changed jobs and now communte from Santa Monica, CA to Irvine - 50 miles each way. Until we decide if we are moving down to Orange County, I decided to buy a commuter car to keep some miles, and wear and tear, off the Mustang. The commuter car is a 2001 Dodge Neon. Its certainly not the most exciting car to drive, but it gets good gas mileage and serves its purpose well. I definitely appreciate the Stang even more now when I drive it.

Free is nice,
Gas mileage great, (dollar a liter?)
Treating your Mustang as special, No Flame Here.
Actually they just put it up to $ 1.04.99 a litre here because we have a long week-end.

Wink

J/k
i can't laugh...My boyfriends dad got a chevette from a friend and told Ricky (my boyfriend) and his cousin that if they got it running they could have it. They filled the carburator w/ gas and lit the car on fire and it cranked right up. They put the fire out and IT WAS ON! they had their 1st car at 13. 1st thing thjey did was a custom paint job, and custom exhuast (cut the cat off) and hit the 10 acre field you see behind it! Yours will look like CORvette compared to theirs!

My neighbour has a 1987 Chevette, automatic :notnice: that they want to get rid of. The body is in great shape, just needs the engine tweeked. They told me I could take it for free, so I think that is going to be my new daily driver. :bang:

Stop it, I can hear you laughing. I don't like puting 50 kms a day on my 05 (I'm already over 10k on it) plus worrying about door dings etc., so I think this will be a great thing. I could park the Mustang in a nice warm, dry garage for the winter and drive the crap out of a beater.
I will miss the 05 on the daily commute the odd time, but traffice stinks during rush hour and the Stang never gets to stretch it's legs anyway.

I have another autocross event on this Sunday, so the Stang will run free for a little bit. Man, those are fun to take part in!
Okay.......MY FLAME SUIT IS ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Take the Chevette, it will make you appreciate the Mustang that much more. I have a 1993 Escort with 170,000 kms that is bullitproof, gets 35 mpg in town and I don't care if it gets bent, scratched, wet or rusted. The 05 is still new and wonderful every time it gets out.

Oh man, a Chevette. I knew a guy once that had one. It was red. The nicest thing about the car was the Shakespear CB antenna I sold him along with his CB radio. His handle was of course, "The Red Vette".

Enjoy all 55 horsepower!!

I do the same thing for my 180km commute

The highways in Toronto are treacharous as well, I'd hate to be riding the clutch in stop & go rush hour traffic

I used to drive a '79 Pinto - even worse. But it was economical and reliable, which makes a good combination!

I'm planning on getting a new car soon, either an Audi A3 or Nissan Altima, and my dad's planning on keeping the '85 Caprice I'm driving now (he bought it for me). First he said he'd keep it at home, but now he's thinking of leaving it up here for them to drive when they come camping up here. We'll halve the cheap insurance and gas, and I'll drive it once/week and when there's salt on the roads. Sounds like a deal to me!

OHMYGOD!!! Didn't you get the Mustang to drive? Put the miles on it! How can you go from a Mustang to a Chevette? At first, I thought you were joking. Now I just wish you were.

A free Chevette costs way more than it's worth!

I don't blame ya one bit! I have a little 4 cylinder truck that I SHOULD be driving everyday. Thing is, I have a hard time prying myself away from the stang.

I'm getting better, I actually did drive my truck once this week. Baby steps
Marvin, Dr. Leo Marvin.

I have no problem have a beater to drive as the second car. Especially if it's free. Can't go wrong there. Save the stang for the special days. Like Monday through Sunday.

Good point but as long as we are in tune with what is around us , there are less likely hood of an accident , yes it could happen at any given time but it takes two parties right ! so as long as you are alert the safer you are ex my work truck never an incident except one time at a red light I was first at the stop, a guy nailed me doing about 40 and the jerk was driving an uninsured truck that was not even his. I think it way Better to have a beeter for our winter months here, after all we hardly get snow , but some ice and people here just don't know how to handle it ( black ice ) my 4.5 cents.

I dont' live my life like that, worrying. When your time is up, it is up. I enjoy every day and I am not afraid of death when it comes knocking.

Having said that, I don't do stupid things that are high risk, but I enjoy life. I pay attention on the road. I cannot control other people. I could die in my 05 just as easy as any car in a crash. Yes, it is safer than a Chevette, but I used to ride a scooter to work. Get hit on that and it is game over.

I had a very bad crash in a 87 Suzuki Forsa back in 88 and mine and the other car were destroyed. After being T-boned, doing a couple flips in a ditch and landing on a fire hydrant upside down crushing the roof into the steering wheel, I walked away without a scratch, wasn't my time.
