UPR Catch Can Installed & Road Test....

A while back i ordered the UPR catch can from a vendor. Minor mishap, the shop ordered the wrong side catch can. they ordered me a passenger side can that came with 3/8" fittings, I wanted the drivers side, with the 5/8" fittings. one phone call to Jeremy at UPR, 2 days later I had the fittings and hose at my door. props to Jeremy at UPR for his speedy customer service. I'm very inpressed with this can. this can was very well machined, billet and is about the size of a soda can!

I finally was able to get around to installing the catch can about a 2 weeks ago. the toughest part about this install was finding a location to mount this can with a whipple s/c kit, for there really was 0 room anywhere to install this. an hour thinkin, i decided to do a "piggyback" system off the power steering resevoir bolt. went to work the next day and stopped by the truck shop and got a bracket of some sort that they gave me that was going to be scrap metal. trimmed down the pieces, bent it a few times with pliers, drilld the holes, slapped a coat of high temp black paint and I had a bracket made for mounting. once everything was mounted, connected the hoses with the supplied hose from UPR, clamped everything up and she was good to go. here are some before and after install pics:

Road Test

Once i had it installed, I decided to do a weekend road test. I live in New Jersey, so why not do a turnpike road test. total I did about a 230 mile round trip, from south jersey to north jersey, with a few stops in between up in north jersey for a weekend, and all the way back down to south jersey. driving different variations of cruise control to WOT etc. the end result, a nice puddle of blow by in the can, and was amazed at how much this worked! anyone running any sort of F/I on their vehicle, highly recommend you pick up one of these catch cans! def worth the investment!
*sorry about the picture, its kinda hard to see since the catch can is black, so i tried to get the best picture possible*

Nice write up I plan to replace my "Home Depot" version with a catch can from Moroso that I just saw at SEMA. I plan to use some AN fittings to plumb the thing in. I'll post pict's when its done.

Nice write-up, but I disagree with your statement that FI owners should get one. I recommend a separator for N/A cars, and deletion of the PCV system (with breathers and a catch can) for FI cars. This has been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere.

very true. i didn't know of many people whom have run catch cans N/A, but i was speaking on F/I since i have a whipple. i'm sure N/A people would benefit as well. changing my statement

I have the same UPR can on mine and get roughly the same results you do... Though I like your mounting location better then mine. I have mine mounted on the back side of the heat shield, down low.

Is that where its supposed to be mounted? I think I like that the best, gets it as high as possible which means it will trap the mist but any big burps would drain back in to the cover rather than flow downhill into the can. I had bought a small home depot style but never installed it, like the amount shown in the original post would fill mine and I really wouldn't want to engine sucking in a huge gulp if it filled completely.

How do these drain? just unscrew the bottom?

You can mount them wherever you want.

My post about my setup was lost in the crash, so here it is at another forum: Link. The video is very telling.

Why did you switch from the UPR to the Jaz? How bad are the fumes as far as smelling while driving? Does the filter make a mess, I saw a similar setup on a hotrod that was blowing oil through the filter element.

Like Ray said, you can mount them wherever you want. I wanted a spot that was out of the way, yet accessable. The bottom of the can unscrews. I drain mine about once a month and usually find about an ounce or two has accumulated in that time. (I drive daily, but only about 600 miles per month, on average). I also ran a PCV valve in line before the catch can to minimized the amount of oil vapor that gets to the catch can in the first place.

I believe that the separator/PCV system makes enough restriction that it doesn't vent the crankcase adequately. A breather system does.

None.

No mess for me. Literally, none on my blown car.

I really like the JLT one that just mounts inline. Its a very clean and quick install utilizing a supplied factory hose and connectors.

What size AN steel braided hose can I use with this type of set up? I have a Moroso Catch can.

If you pull your wire connector and use that hole it will put it more drivers side so you can actually remove the bottom as it will clear the cam covers.
