I think you are wise to trade in you '99 GT rather than attempting to sell it, if you really want your '05. I tried to sell my '02 GT a month and a half ago as my '05 GT was arriving. It was in great condition and fully loaded. I couldn't get anyone to even see the car. The highest anyone offered over the phone was $12,000. I had it advertised for a good month. Carmax offered me $12,400 for it. The current used car market in So. Cal for Mustangs is dismal in my opinion.
My '02 was coming off of a lease, so I ended up just turning it back into my dealer when my '05 arrived (I was trying to sell it because I had to pay excess mileage charges at the end of the lease). I had to get at least $13,000 for it to make it worthwhile, which I didn't get.

Jessica - First of all - Prayers and best wishes for your daughter and what you are all going through. We really care.
Second - have you explored availablility of home equity? Perhaps you are already maxed out there but if not and do have a home equity credit line it may help make up the difference. Just a thought.

Jess, I was a Loan officer for a bank for quite some times...I have connections with most of the major banks and Credit Unions. Let me know if you need info/ideas on a Home Equity Line. Rates are still low.

K, wanted to update everyone...
I went to CarMax this am, and they offered me $7600. as I was signing paperwork, a friend calls and says "I will give you $6k to put down on it today, then we sell it this weekend, and whatever it sells over the 6k you get to keep for XMas." So, thats what we did. I am only going to try to sell it for 6 days, if it doesnt sell, I go back to CarMax and get my $7600. Thats still $1600 in the black.
After spending about 2 hours at CarMax, driving the 99 to RSM Ford, spending another 4 hours there, my baby is home...
So, I have her.... she is beautiful, she drives like a dream, and I so glad I listened to everyone here and WAITED!! LOL
As soon as I find my data cable I will post some pics.. I took them in our really ugly garage, but, boy does she look good sitting down there!
Oh, and I will be putting the car on EBay, I am going to set the reserve at $8k, and MAYBE, just MAYBE, I will get more than that for the 99.

With so many on the road, I would have thought the "gawking" would have died down some... On the freeway on the way home from the dealership, this guy was literally hanging out of the driver side of his truck looking my car over. Then at a club last night, I came out side twice, and both times my car had people standing there checking it out. The good thing is one of the guys last night took my info to buy my 99!! Woohoo!
