Thumbs down

I have a V6 vert with traction control. No mods other than 17 inch GT optional rims and tires. Driving tonight with cruise off and traction control off...was stopped and decided to punch it...when I took my foor off the gas, car kept accelerating - braking was poor, as if the pedal would not go down very far. Down shifted one gear; kept foot on brake and hit the cruise off button anyway, just in casel Car began to slow down some, there was a pop - like a something popping unstuck, and everything returned to normal. Was going just over 60 - no other traffic, but covered more distance than I realized (and not until I wrote this). Never had this happen in any vehicle.
Anyone else have this happen?

As I thought it about, I thought it might be the vinyl floor mat - and when I got back in the car, the mat was well forward - I think it may have gotten pushed up under the pedals. I moved it back to the rear and everything seemed normal.
Any ideas about this being the reason?

Added 10-15-05: Took the car to the dealer - will post what they say.

Scary hiney feeling isn't it!!!! I totally know what you're talking about only they've yet to find anything wrong with mine and its done it again since I've had it out of the shop. NOW THE FREAKIN ENGINE light is on... so its going back in the morning. I love my girl but man this is frustrating!!!! If it gets stuck and you cant get it to release .... JUST REMEMBER throw it in neutral and turn it off.

OH and PS please let us know if they find anything on yours cause my dealer is at a loss! :bang:

Car is ready to pick up. Of course, they could not duplicate it. They think the vinyl mats are too long and got stuck behind the pedals and would not let the pedals go back 'down.' I'm going to keep the mats but cut the driver's side down so that there is no way that this can happen again - if the mats were the cause. Wish me luck.

too bad they couldn't replicate and fix the problem.
frankly i don't think the mats are the problem (refer to my previous post in this thread) but i hope for your own good, that the mats are to blame this time!

just a word of caution if this ever happens again to you,
throw the gear in neutral as soon as you can and kick the pedal a couple of times.. if it doesn't free up then you gotta shut the engine off.
you'll have to be the judge here on what to do and when to do it..
after all, you wouldn't want your car revving up at redline for long potentially harming your engine, yet neither do you wanna power down your steering and brakes hydraulics unless you're prepared for it (driving on a straight)

good luck :\

I used to work in a very busy parking garage in downtown LA in the late 70s/early 80s. I've seen cars do weird stuff. But usually it's driver error...USUALLY. We left them running for the owner to drive out. I've had a 71 LTD pop out of park into reverse. I've also seen a new 82 Seville careen across Figaroa Blvd...just like the Audi 5000 below.

Unintended acceleration is nothing new, it's been going on since at least the Audi 5000, circa 1983. That proved to be driver error, before automatic interlocks a driver could just drop the shifter into D without a foot on the brake.,,,and actually have floored the accelerator instead of standing on the brake, or in a panic hit the accelerator by mistake. Although the bad PR nearly sunk Audi. Ford is a much bigger target and an easier mark.

It's not just Audi or Ford, it seems to happen to all cars:

Has anyone reported this to the NHTSA? I think they should know about it.

I have mats on the top of my stock mats at the moment and sometimes when the mats slide up the clutch sticks. I thoguht that it was a malfunction but I noticed everytime it does that the mats are slid all the way up and cut off the pedal from coming back up. The dealer was right in what they told you.
