UH OHH i may have broken my 05
The other day I was driving my car and accidentally downshifted into 2nd from 3rd at aobut 3500 rpms instead of 4th while applying gas. Hit the rev limiter real hard and the car didnt make a great sound. Then it smelled very bad for like 30 seconds and then i didnt notice anything untill the next red light. From a stand still, accelerating semi-slowly while easing off the clutch the car has a slight shake almost like the tires are slipping. THis only happens sometimes. I drove it a little today and could only make it do it three times.
OH YEA ANNNNDDDD.......... after having my car 5 MONTHS(since october 24th)... yes 5 MONTHS... I went to the gas station and guess what... my car did that stupid thing where you have to tilt the nozzle upside down to make the gas go in.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS WRONG WITH MY CAR (about my downshifting icident)? Do you think i broke something?? What should I do?? Help!!

Get it checked out asap. They will see how high the rpms were so don't bother trying to fib. Explain to them what happened and have them check it out. Same thing happened to a guy in a Honda, but he blew the motor. Honda would not pay for it because they saw how high it revved. But he was polite with them and did the right things right, Honda paid 1/2 the bill for him to fix what was wrong, think he had some bent valves and maybe some other stuff.
Good luck hope it isn't broken.

I'm no expert, and it's just a guess, but you might have slipped the clutch a little and smoked it. That'll build up a glaze on the surface that'll make the clutch chatter a little until the glaze wears off. Just driving it normally for a while will eventually wear the glaze off, but it might not be able to handle as high of loads (no speed shifting, etc.) until it gets back to some more normal friction surface.
The rev limiter should have protected your engine...even if it did spin higher than normal I wouldn't think it would have the symptoms you mention.
I accidentally slipped my clutch on a hard takeoff after I had my GT for a couple of weeks. Stunk pretty well, but it's fine now.
Certainly nothing wrong with having the dealer check it if it'll make you feel better...
Best of luck...

Sounds like the clutch is slipping somewhat now ( In my experience, I would describe such a condition as "shuddering" upon take off", and it would typically be most or only evident when taking off in first gear). I don't know if it will correct itself eventually as others have stated.
You know I did the same thing on a test drive. I was doing 50mph in 5th and I wanted to downshift to 4th to see what the car could do but I hit 2nd instead and the downshift induced braking and the wheels squealed, I gassed it shifted up to 3rd and down to 4th and was at 85 mph in a flash. The salesman just laughed. He said another customer retired USAF jet pilot was up to 110 mph on the same road on his test run. Point is it didn't hurt that car at all its bulletproof.

I agree with the clutch glaze idea. I don't see how you could have hurt the engine. Odd that the clutch would have glazed from just that though.
You better get it checked. the rev limiter may not have saved you from damage for the fact the over revs were from downshifting. Even if it kick in the force of the car going that speed may have forced the engine into over rev's. mph x gear ratio for that speed
even with engine rev limiter engaged the engine might be force over limit.
also, you may have sprung your clutch. which it won't heal itself.

well i would take it in. asap . and as for telling if the rpm's were hi well we can't only if the checkengine light came on and it would have to happen at that particular rpm so no worries plus theres a rev limiter

I agree with railray you burn the clutch and glazed it

I agree with redstang and railray. Also, you would have really had to try hard to hit the rev limiter. 3500 rpm in 3rd is about 58 mph. That same 58 mph is only 5300 rpm in second gear. That's a full 1,000 rpm below the rev limiter.
The Boss Hog
did a similar thing goin bout 70 in 5th on the freeway and tried to go into 4th but hit 2nd instead. rpms shot up but i knew i did sumn wrong so i put clutch in immediately. smelt a lil clutch but the only effect it really had was givin me a lil scare. all was fine after a couple miles of drivin back home.
id say even tho the rev limit is 6250, if u downshifted to the wrong gear this engine will hold up well past 7000rpm if its only for a moment or two. shoot, i have my rev limit at 6800 and take it up there once in a while and it loooves it from 6200-6800. i bet accidentally downshiftin and takin it up to 8k wouldn hurt it as long as u didn leave it up there

you know there is a service bullitin for the Mustangs Gas tanks. Take the car in and they will replace your gas tank so you wont have to turn the nozzle upside down.

Fuel tanks are on backorder at this time, may be related to the fact that Ford is increasing Mustang production by more than 70%-bad for us waiting for tanks, good for future Mustang orderers!
