Same mistake Chrysler's making w/ the Charger.
The muscle car era is a period of auto making that people are still passionate about. I think it's insulting to the namplate what GM and Chrysler have done to the GTO and Charger.

There was a red Charger on the highway behind me on my way to work. I know the name they used wasn't a good idea but the car did look mean behind me.
(notice I said "behind me")

The Charger will do ok. Afterall, for just over 30k, you get a decently styled powerhouse with the hemi. But I would have named it something else.

I saw that show a couple weeks back...sure looked like a pontiac infomercial too me...Also why is it that all GM cars look the same? Did there design guys all graduate from the same japanees school of bubble wrap.Even the new vette (and i love the old ones) looks "clinical".
Note to GM: (before your stock goes to junk like your bonds)
hint hint early 60's camaro and vette...ya might wanna bring them design guys back...

I would love to see a retro Camaro, Charger. GTO, or even a Duster. How 'bout a 'Cuda?
There is nothing like '60's, '70's pure American styling and muscle.

If you put $8,000.00 into the motor of the stang it would spank the GTO. I guess I still don't understand why people compare apples to oranges.

Competing cars with similar performance cost thousands more when comparing MSRP. GM has had to deeply discount product to get it to move.
I would have considered a GTO had it not been so plain looking. It's just a big cavalier.

This just in...
2005 Pontiac GTO, at $32.5K, runs the 1/4 mile in 13.5 seconds, and looks like a rabid goat doing it.
2005 Ford Mustang GT plus a super charger and a few other mods, also at $32.5K, runs the 1/4 mile in 11.5 seconds.
Edit: I guess that answers the Mustang vs. GTO debate.

Don't take this the wrong way, but now you sound like ricers ("I can spent $$$ that I saved because my car is cheaper for mods"). You can also get Civic for $13,000 and then spend $12,000 on mods and you'll have better time than 13.7 sec (Mustang GT 1/4 mile time) on 1/4 mile for sure.

While the GTO is to be respected and is a very nice vehicle in my opinion, it is overpriced. No if, ands, or buts about it.

He's talking a difference of $5,000 not $12,000 though and a simple power adder. To get a civic in the 13's you'll have to add more than a bolt on turbo that requires no diving into the block.

What I'm saying is this is argument that ricers always use. If you tell them that Mustang is faster on Civic they will usually reply "For the $$$ difference between Civic and Mustang I can spent that money on mods and I'll have faster car." Correct me if I'm wrong.

For $12,000 on mods you can make any 4-cyl fast.

I don't think they're trying to sound like that though, I think they're just expressing that the GTO is overpriced for what it is. Albeit it is a very nice vehicle.
as some one who has driven the GTO on many occasion cuz my aunt happened to buy one... they stink. feel really heavy and feel like they are lugging behind. it is auto... but still stinks IMO. looks like a monkey's butt. and they don't sell. all over the autotrader... cars that were sticker $34k... they sell used with 1-4k miles for $24k!!!! thats horrible resale value. I don't know if you know that GM made u pay a "collectible" car value on top of the price of the car!
GM just fell short. very short. the interior is sweet. you can't knock it. it is very sweet. but no matter how nice the interior is... it still won't overshadow the cavalier exterior.
and yes... its so retarded to compare a 330i and a GT! what the??? are they thinking??? what's next?? GT vs. STi vs. 911 GT3 vs. X5????
isn't it funny how the cheapest car on the list is the most respected and most desired car. irony isn't??

==Remember the late 60's Le Mans (I do...we raised Holy Hades in my friends). Remember the mid-70's "J" block Grand Prix ??==
I had a '68 GTO, '69 Judge and '72 455 Grand Prix. I have very fond memories of all of them. But especially the Grand Prix because it was the king of sleepers. I spanked many a musclecar with that bad boy. The only time I remember really being taught a lesson in it was by a modded Vette, he left me for dead
There's always someone faster around if you look hard enough. Anyway, I think a lot of people have forgotten what put the GTO on the map in '64. Pontiac took a plain-jane sedan and stuck a big motor in it. It was cheap, and it was very fast. And it looked like your dad's sedan. They were true sleepers. The new GTO isn't a lot different from that original formula at its heart, it's a very quick car in a very plain-looking package (albeit a pricey one). You can argue that the 1/4 mile time isn't a LOT faster than the GT, but I have yet to hear someone say that it isn't faster. When you're out there racing, does it matter whether you get beat by a fraction of a second or by several seconds? Not really, you still got beat! Stock against stock, the GTO is faster, there's just no argument basis for otherwise.
So why do I have a Mustang instead of a GTO? It's quite simple, I care more about the looks than the performance. The GTO is UGLY!! It pains me to say it because for a loooong time I was a diehard Pontiac nut. The GTO eventually morphed into a hot rod in appearance and performance in the late 60's. The emblem and dual hood scoops garnered attention and respect. Slap a wing on the back and people knew you meant business. Although my old Grand Prix didn't look like a hot rod, it was a beautiful, classy looking cruiser. The new GTO has none of that going for it, it is the ugly wallflower that no one wants to dance with.
Lastly, I find it interesting that everyone thinks Ford is pure genius and Pontiac (etc.) are morons when it comes to design. Has everyone forgotten the Thunderbird? Let's face it, Ford got lucky with the Mustang. It was a gamble that paid off. The Thunderbird proves they can design cars just as ugly as Pontiac, and that they can wreck a classic marque too, thank you very much. Let's just hope that the Mustang success story starts a new design trend with other manufacturers

'05 GTO sales are up 76% through may, according to Autoweek, some dealers are having trouble keeping them in stock. I hate the "us vs them" attitude that infests ever car message board,is it some kind of sin to like two different kinds of cars,it wouldn't matter what the new goat looked like, you guys would still hate it,just like the GTO people hate Mustangs and the Corvette people hate Porsches and vice versablah, blah, blah, are you people so insecure about your cars to (gasp)admit that another car is a nice car........a cool looking coupe with 400HP for 30K is a screaming deal. Looks are subjective,The original was a granny car with a hot engine and a stolen name,it also looked like every other Pontiac in the line-up. The new GTO is the best goat ever.
