Hey y'all, while browsing the net for info, I was trying to figure out the difference between getting a manual and the 5 speed Auto. :drive:

I've found a few sites out there saying the Tremec 3650 has quality issues, specifically that 1st to 2nd is susceptible to grinding and clunking after less than 12k, and that many people have had synchros and other parts just plain burn out quick. Does anyone here have good insight on whether we are looking at dealing with the same problems?

And if you also read, this is a newer T3650, and not the same one that people are having issues with.

don't know about any problems with ford manual trannys...but anytime you start talking about synchro problems...especially 1st to 2nd, you look at the driver...it takes a deft hand and left foot AND timing to have a set of synchros last the life of the car...it's not easy to drive a manual in a proper fashion...just my .02 cents. jack 90seville 94k

Just ask anyone who owns a Mustang GT built in the last three or four years, they've all got the Tremec 3650. I've heard a few complaints from way back, but it seems like that's been addressed. :shrug:

Now wait is the Tremec the same auto in the Ford Explorers (2000+)?

Because I know our explorer has five gears and we've had no problems with the tranny even at 45k.

I've driven several 2004 Mustang GT's with sticks. While it wasn't the smoothest tranny I've ever used, I had no problems with them. The 2005 Mustang's 5 speed will be even better.

No matter. I'm going with the auto.

Every manual tranny i've driven was harsh, so literally anything would be an improvement.

yeah lol. Early morning, and the "for automatic buyers" sub heading threw me off.

I had '03 GT Vert. with the p.o.s. 3650 in it. It made me wish I bought the auto instead. I got pissed everytime I drove that thing. It was notchy and tough to shift into 2nd. It made a whinning sound in first and second. If you tried to take off in a mildly aggressive fashion (to keep up with the SUV next to you) it would sometime miss a shift. The dealer said that these symptons are typical and normal (some better and some worse). So, eventually I just stopped driving it and after a few months of just sitting in the garage I traded it in with only 4k miles on it.

If I were buying an '05, I would get the 5 spd. auto even though I like driving a stick. Besides with the 5 spd. auto, your take offs are going to much quicker and smother then any stick.

Oh, I loved the '03 Vert., sometime I wish I still had it. I just couldn't stand for the life of me the tranny.

Okay, I'll admit it, I thought the 3650 was the auto tranny, not the manual. I'm glad to see some good response though, thanks a lot. If anyone is really knowledgeable, when they say a 5 speed auto, that means 5 upward gears in addition to P,R and N right? I've begun to seriously consider the auto because I don't drag race, so if I can get a good jump off the line with the auto, I might just go for it.

I've read a lot on these threads and I get the impression that with the propsed power of this engine, there won't be much of a difference in performance between the stick and the auto except when it comes to quarter times.

Now, I love to drive, and my heart says stick, but the DC traffic screams auto. Basically, I was set to buy a 3-series driving machine until I saw the 05 Stang.

Also, what do you guys think of screaming yellow?

Why couldn't they use the 6 speed out of the Cobra (T-56)? :scratch:

I like the screaming yellow a lot. It was my second choice after Competition Orange on my car. It's a very rich yellow, which I prefer to the Zinc Yellow that ford also uses in some years.

I'd love to have a 6-speed. I finally drove one, Freightliner FL50, not exactly a sport one but i found it very enjoyable having that extra gear.

Most guys don't buy manual transmissions for the "performance." We buy them for the joy of driving. Manuals put yuo more in touch with the car and get you more involved in driving it. Unless you live where manuals are a burden (LA, Atlanta, Houston,etc) you should consider a manual. $.02

That's what my friends have been telling me. They were so convincing, that I ordered mine with a manual tranny. I've never even driven one before, but I still have some time to learn. I just hope I get the hang of it in time.
