i have the exact same symptoms as you, for a couple winters now, only when the weather gets cold, only on cold start up and completely goes away when it warms up, and i was hoping you had my noise but its different. take away the rubbing part of your noise and thats mine. i replaced pulleys, tried a stethoscope, cant find it. wondered if its my auto trans or maybe the ps pump.

500 as in $500 to get fixed!?? Shouldn't they have covered that under TSB or warranty?

 

tsb's are not waranty. mine expired last july. if i had brought it in very close to that, it might have been covered. however i waited till the next february, its on me. stinks but true. powertrain (what it would have been covered under) was 5 years/60k. it sucks,cand i coujld have pushed, but i was more afraid that they were going to gouge me into a clutch. i am not ultra excited, but not too pissed.
