Too bad the once rumoured V-8 LX didn't happen

So I'm in the minority but we're still out here. It's not a money issue to want a car with less equipment, it's a power to weight issue. I drove an '05 GT on Saturday and really liked the car but compared to my LX 5.0L notchback, it really feels heavy and the engine seems to be working hard to get the car moving. With the 3.55 gears, I expected more bottom end pull. Perhaps a set of 4.10s would wake the beast up since the power seems to be in the mid-range and higher. Ford says they went with the live axle in the new model because most of the buyers wanted it for drag-racing, etc... well, not many "dragracers" want 300+ pounds of luxury options in their cars so it's a little confusing.
I'll end up with a factory-loaded GT in the end but it looks like I'll have to keep the LX to have fun with.

BTW, take a look at my sig and you'll see the only Mustangs I have ever owned were LX 5.0s so I understand where you're coming from. However, I think the base '05 GT isn't that different than the old LX models.

I agree, an LX would be nice. There's got to be a significant number of folks out there who want the performance but can't afford the posh stuff that jacks up the price. They end up getting Foxes and Camaros.
I'd love it if they offered a $15k (or whatever it would be) car with just the engine on the chassis inside the body, the necessary gauges, racing-style seats and not much else. Who's too lazy to crank down the windows? Who wants mega-watt stereos on the drag car he works on in his backyard after work?
While I'm not everybody, I suspect it would garner a following.

I can give a good reason why it won't happen.
Those old Fox body LX Stangs of the late '80's started out as late '70's/early '80's Fairmont based cars. They didn't have options like power windows and locks and heavy ground effects in '79 thru the early '80's.
It is much easier to leave off options that are added later in a product's cycle, than it is to remove "options" from a car that was designed from the beginning for them.
The '05 Mustang was designed from day one to have power locks and windows and a number of other options. It would likely cost Ford as much or more money at this point to de-option the car than to sell it as is. Thus ruining any cost savings they would pass on to the buyer. Plus there is the fact that the minority you speak of is much smaller than i think you realize. There is likely no real market there for Ford.
As far as the stripped-down drag racer reasons for selling a car like this, they are not of interest to Ford at this point. They have moved the Mustang upscale beyond a pieced together pony car from the late '70's.
Please, don't take this the wrong way, my first Mustang was a '79 with a 5.0. I loved those cars.
But if you are going to ask "why no LX", then you might as well ask "why no carburators" or "why no vinyl seats". These are all by-gone concepts. I love where the Mustang has come from as much as anyone, but i look forward to where it is going more.
Besides, if you want a stripped down '05, you can always buy one and then strip it for the weight savings yourself. That has always been the drag racer's way anyway.

The GT is a gorgeous piece of kit but why does it have to have power everything and A/C as standard equipment? What I want is a strippo Mustang with the V8 in the vein of my 89 LX 5.0L. Imagine a standard V6 2005 Mustang with the GT powertrain and nothing else... roll-up windows, manual door locks, manual windows, no air, 16" Halibrand wheels with the spinner centercaps... . Where's my LX, Ford? Cash waiting!!!

I have your answer, wait until the 06's come out, buy a used 05 off of a used car dealer at a much lower price then new (love depreciation), then rip out all the stuff you don't like, trade someone with a V6 your GT wheels for their 16 inch wheels, also trade them seats, and you'll even have some factory warranty left, there's your LX. If you don't like that answer, buy tissue.
Oh, and I'm a fan of the 5.0 LX so don't think I'm dissing the car.

All Honda's, except for the lowest end base Civics which no one buys, are power everything.
There are a few more makes that offer manual windows, including Hyundai, Chevy and Lotus (yes the $40K Elise only offers manual windows unless you opt for the touring package upgrade).

I knew it had the A/C and stereo delete but I couldn't remember about the windows. It makes sense to have just one system.

good question. probably, but you never know.
basically what i think the LX 4.6 should be is a 4.6 3V motor, with a V6 everything else. it would be awesome for us with less $$ to buy a stang with. plus, it would increase V8 sales. people who couldnt a fford a full out GT, would opt for the stripped down V8 car. not sure if thats good or bad, but most likely good for the enthusiast. with more V8 cars in the market, the overall cost of all V8 cars would go down due to a larger amount of them on the market, thus causing even lower priced V8 cars.... and all i can say is PLEASE FORD, DO IT!!!!
