Well, I ordered my GT coupe earlier this month. I always assumed I'd order a hardtop, although I've always planned on getting a convertible "some day".

On the way home last night I saw a new black GT convertible sitting in a local dealer's lot. Hmmm... I'll just take a quick look.

I've gotta say it was very sweet. Sweet to the point that I'm seriously considering cancelling my coupe order and going with the ragtop. I'll go with the same combo - Redfire/Dark Charcoal leather with a black top, IUP, stick, etc.

Right now I'm on the fence. I love the lines of the coupe but I can imagine driving the convertible once the weather warms up. I can't lose either way, but what do you guys think? I guess it wouldn't hurt if the rumors are true that 'verts are being given higher priority than coupes right now, eh?

Thanks,

Rob

Hey Rob:
I ordered a redfire coupe in Dec/04 then Ford announced the convertible in January. I contacted my dealer and changed the order to the convertible. Same options ... just changed to the soft top. My first ordered car came in last week and it looks great but I know the convertible will look even better. I can wait another 2 weeks for my vert as it is ready but Ford Canada is not releasing any verts until the week of March 28. It'll be a big week in Canada for Ford dealers. Just make sure you get what you want (coupe or vert).

Guys......I went 60 miles to test-drive an 05 GT 5spd manual Vert in PA this past week, with the top up and down. Let me tell you...........it was awesome. I still can't wipe the smile off my face after that.

I actually thought there was a little more headroom in the convertible (I'm 6'2") than the coupe (which I've driven 2 times) and I think the "exhaust notes" sounded better in the vert.

I too was, and I say was on the fence myself prior to this spin............and now you can see my signature below.

PS: The car was at Tom Hesser Ford in Scranton, PA. Sonic Blue, Black Top, Black Interior, My Color, Shaker 1000, Anti Theft, MSRP. It was available a few days ago since the person that ordered it had some troubles getting money together, but the dealer called me saying someone else was interested in purchasing. I don't know if the car is still there or not.

I ordered my vert at our local dealer on Monday (yeah 2 days ago) since the one I drove wasn't quite what I wanted........GO FOR THE VERT!

I have always been a coupe guy. My first car was a '69 302. My second a '66. But 2 years ago I went to Hawaii on vacation and rented a red Mustang 'vert and that was it. It's just too much fun.

You have to drive one I think. Drive it and see how you feel. That's the only way I think.

Maybe a rental of an '04 from the local Hertz dealer is in order.

I really like the roofline of the coupe. That is a big part of the retro style that draws me to the car. Not that the convertible doesn't look good -

And the additional cost of the convertible is a bit steep (for me). Also, I might feel differently if I did not already have a convertible (Impala).

Just my 2 cents...

You know...I have been hearing everyone say that the verts don't look retro. The real deal is that they don't look like a retro fastback. I will give you that. But, to my recollection, didn't they make verts in the late 60's? The current verts look like retro verts. To me, they look no less retro, just not the same retro.

I would get the vert.

I just started a thread of a redfire vert but i have the red interior. I can't wait to drive with the top down. The coupe is great but for weekend cruising during warm weather nothing like a vert.

Guys,

Hey, thanks for all the great input. Steve, I checked out your thread on your new baby. Congrats! Ouch, she's beautiful. I was looking for some more Redfire convertible pics and yours gave me a couple of new views I needed. Now if you could just drop the top and take a few more...

I've had a '68 fastback and a '68 coupe, plus a '86 GT 5.0. Maybe it's time to round out the stable with a convertible. I always figured that if I got an old Mustang convertible it would be a '67 in maroon with the black deluxe interior. I can't imagine getting any closer than this.

Again, thanks for all the input. I think I'm going to have to stop by my dealer tomorrow night and crunch some more numbers. Thank God for X-plan!

Rob

I'll drop the top today and take some pics to post tonight after she's had a bubble bath.

Well I went by the dealer tonight and talked convertibles. Unfortunately all their allocations for convertibles are history. Since I got X-plan and that's hard to come by around here I'm going to stick with the coupe for the time being. If it turns out that I can't get my car built as a 2005 then I'll likely reorder it as a convertible in May. Worst case I'll end up getting the car in late fall and have to wait until spring to really enjoy it, but regardless I'm getting a new Mustang GT one way or another and luckily I'm pretty patient. It just gives me more time to save additional $$$ for my down payment.

Thanks for all the input, and Steve I'll be keeping my eyes open for those top-down pics of your new ride.
