Thinking about owning a Mustang - New member question

I've been lurking around here lusting after all the nice cars and really would like to own a Mustang. It'll just be a weekend car so I have been going through the used car ads and there isn't much around here. I'm a 49 year old guy that loves American muscle cars. I sold my '99 Camaro SS a few years ago and really miss the V8 rumble. I was originally looking at used Roush and Saleens but they are more than I want to spend. There is a red,'06 GT with 11000 miles near me, 5 speed, red leather etc and white stripes. The car is pristine. The white stripes have to go though.

One problem I have is I'm not into red cars but some of the torch red ones on this site are changing my mind. I love the look of the 69 boss tributes some of the members have on here with the black decals, shaker hoods, Magnum 500 wheel, etc.

The car I'm looking at, I probably can get for around $19K, parts for modding the car, wheels/tires, shaker, louvers, chin spoiler, lowering, etc would be around $3500 to $4000. The total investment would be $23K (I'd do the work myself).

My questions:
1. Would this car be very re-saleable?

2. I know most of the cars on here are pretty flashy but do you guys feel like they attract too much attention?

3. Do you guys closer to my age feel kind of out of place driving a car like this?

Thanks for the input and I hope my questions are too newbish.

If your not into red dont get one. Wait for the car you want. Im 41 and feel fine driving the car. I flew from San Diego to San Fransisco to get mine. The Mustang has such a diverse driver field the age doesnt matter. The attention is 95% positive. Any negitive is either from driving like a douche or from haters. The resale fluctuates alot. If you keep the milage down you should be fine. Good luck finding what you want and enjoy it when you get it.

Sounds like a decent price. Is it from a dealer, or private party?

1: Why are you already thinking about selling a car that you haven't bought yet? You can always resell a car...but you'll lose money on every mod you make. Personally, I'd pay someone *less* money if the car is modified. You're usually better off returning the car back to stock and selling all of your mods individually.

2: Not all of our cars are extremely modified. But even a few simple mods (such as what you have planned) would easily make it stand out from the crowd. It really depends on how much attention you want.

3: I'm nowhere close to your age, but I see people of all ages driving Mustangs.

The car is at a Kia dealer. I always look at resale when I make a big purchase. Makes it easier when you want someyhing gone versus taking a bath on it. I know mods are basically lost money from motorcycles I've had and I do agree returning a car to stock and selling the aftermarket parts is the best way to go.

  1. The add-ons and mods you do will likely be for your enjoyment. You probably will not get your money back on those.
  2. The Mustang has never been a shy car, but unless you are driving a very unique/rare/old/unusual one, there's many of them out there, so not overly "look at me!"
  3. I'm 52. I drive a black GT vert with red interior. I have driven Mustangs my entire life. I got the usual mid-life crisis jokes. I simply told them, "This is the car I have always wanted. It just took me 30 years to get there." A V8, manual gearbox, and a top that goes down has always been the ideal car for me.

If you're worried about resale value down the line then you may want to bolt on only FRPP products. Initially I too wanted to do the Magnum 500 wheels, etc. but decided to keep the car "Ford" only. I would think this would not impact resale value if you keep the mods limited to what you might find on production Stangs or dealer-installed options.

I think 19 is kind of high for an 06. Get a green one they are better than the red ones. Red cars get more tickets too. I will be turning 50 next month and don't feel out of place at all driving it.

19k is not high at all for only 11k miles. I bought mine ('08 California Special) for $20,500 with 28k miles and that was a good deal.

If you don't want red, then don't get it.

I'm a bit older than you are, so here's my two cents:

Don't worry about resale, don't overthink it, and go get the darned car. Get the color and options you really want. It will make you feel so darned good when you drive it, none of that stuff will matter.

FYI, I had planned to do a bunch of mods to mine, but after I drove it for a little, I realized I really didn't need 'em (except the axle-backs, of course ). These are great cars right out of the box.

If you like the '05-'09 body style, and like dark green or black... Maybe you'd like a Bullitt? Used ones come up for sale often. They're a plainer looking Mustang GT (with V8), but have the deluxe interior and some go-faster stuff on 'em from the factory. I think they're a great "under the radar" cruiser, and are actually a little quicker (stock to stock) than Mustang GTs were.

RE: My questions:
1. Would this car be very re-saleable? It IS resaleable but never expect to get out as much as you put in it. haha..

2. I know most of the cars on here are pretty flashy but do you guys feel like they attract too much attention? These cars are attention ****** all by themselves. LOL.. There is nothing wrong with that I think! With my last S197 I got stopped all the time with people asking questions about it. Like where did you get this part, what year is it, ect.. People love the newer Mustang 05 and up and always love to LOOK at it. haha.. If you don't want attention then you need a Cobalt or something.

3. Do you guys closer to my age feel kind of out of place driving a car like this?
These cars are for ALL ages but I know a lot of people that are older than me and you that drive them. Because of their classic look, they remind people of the car they had when they were a kid or their dad's old Mustang.

just one comment-

Age is a state of mind, you will feel younger every time you turn the key
and hear that growl....

And if you really want to feel younger, get the 5.0...

and I am older than you by many years, I learned to drive on a new 65 !

Totally agree. My first car was a 1970 Mustang. When the 05 came out, the body style was similar I almost bought one but couldnt justify it as I had just bought an F150. When they announced the return of the Boss 302 I couldnt resist. Every time I drive it I am 16 again. Except this Mustang has 3X the horsepower. You will not regret getting one for all the fun it will bring.

You ever make it out to coffee and cars off of HWY 249 and Louetta?

Or maybe Urban Speed off of Washington?

Good replys guys. I've been hunting around for a Black 05 to 09 GT. Not much around here. I'm going to keep looking and wait for the one that really catches my eye. I found a white 08 but it's more than I want to spend. I really want to get one before winter so I have a nice winter project, DD bullitt wheels, shaker, spoilers...

Money isn't an issue but this car will basically sit in my garage 90% of the time so I really don't want to spent $35K on a car. I really do like the retro look. I've learned alot on this site already and love the pics of the cars here.

I think you want a black '08-'09 Bullitt. Classy looking, not overly flashy or childish. It's a deluxe GT, without the spoiler and driving lamps in the grille. They come with the identical 3.73 gears and rear axle that the GT500KR came with, a factory CAI and revised tune. On the interior, they got the GT500 steering wheel, pedal covers, seat style, a special, Bullitt-only engine-turned dash, Bullitt shift **** and bezel, Bullitt gauges, etc. Deluxe inside, clean & simple outside, but with the nicest body style in many years (my opinion). Oh- and resale value had held up much better on the Bullitt, than most other S197s. Prices remain stable in the low 20s, while they sold for $27K-$31K new, depending on when you bought. Mine is a great driver, and much more nimble feeling than my KR (but the KR's a beast on a cool morning!!).

Here's a nice black Bullitt pic., swiped from IMBOC:
