Are they using my car for a demo?

Well, as for the mystery miles...
If the car does not have a QC sticker and the dealer swears that no one did more than get a full tank of gas, lets not forget the little trips from the AAI holding area to the truck/trains, from the trains to trucks and all the moving in between... just my thoughts...

I look at it like this - you have got to trust the guy checking out your car to an extent. It's their job to make sure that you are satisfied with it and if they abuse it, they're done.

I heard from Flat Rock contacts that mine left final assembly and went to the carport on Friday. My salesman had the day off but we e-mailed and he replied that he'd check status on Monday. On Saturday I e-mailed Ford Customer Service and this morning they came back with;
"Thank you for your message of 11/6/04 regarding your 2005 Ford Mustang.
We appreciate the time you have taken to inquire when your vehicle will
arrive to your purchasing dealership for pick-up.
It is always a pleasure to assist enthusiastic and loyal Ford customers
such as yourself.
Richard, according to our resources, your 2005 Ford Mustang will be
arriving to your purchasing dealership 11/15/04."
The car arrived at my dealership late this afternoon and when I drove her she had 2.2 miles!
I take delivery tomorrow, and I expect a mile or two more.
So much for Ford C.S. - they are not aware of the latest status and/or they don't want to overpromise.
Now, you've got to trust that no one is gonna abuse the car on a special vehicle order - The guy at the dealership who checks out your car knows that if he messes with it and gets caught, he's done...
During launch some vehicles have a more extensive quality review for any number of reasons - but it's usually for our best interests. Have some faith.
A lot of people working at Ford are friends of mine and they take this as seriously as we do. They may do things to preproduction, test and pool cars that you dream of, but not the real deal. There is a lot of pride in American automaking. Thats why I drive Fords.

I got my Mustang GT 2 weeks ago and it came off the truck with 40 miles on it. I was at the dealer one hour after it came off the truck, which was confirmed with many friends I have there. My car was built the week of Sept 6, so I guess during that time it was used by somebody for something. There was no documentation from the factory regarding mileage or testing. I would be more at ease if the factory gave a reason for this.
On a high note, the car is great!

As a side note -
The car came off the trailer with a nail sticking out of the back tire which was also flat. They patched it, so I could drive it home. They have ordered a new tire for it.
Two bad I can't get two new back tires out of the deal ... I could lay some serious rubber this week ...

Last weekend I drove a 2005 GT at a local dealership, the salesman was very young. He told me during the test that this was their first 05 and every salesman and mechanic at their store had already drove it. He prompted me to get on it, said it would do much more than what I was doing. I asked about the 2 03 used Cobras they had and he told me which one was the fastest. He said some of the others thought a different one was faster. No need to guess if these guys are out running them before they sell them to us.
I decided I would never buy for this dealership.

Mine had 19 miles on it. the low fuel light was on and said 35 miles to empty. How much gas do they put in them at the factory?

I previously worked in the retail department of a Saturn/Isuzu store, and our sister store (in the same building, sharing a service department) was BMW/Landrover. These are my experiences, of course I can't speak for every retailer.
Absolutely every vehicle we took into stock was driven by a technician, from $5000 jukers to BMW Z8's. It is part of a pre-delivery inspection (PDI) to ensure the integrity of the vehicle. If there was a fault, we wanted it rectified before the customer found it theirself.
As a salesperson whose income depended upon knowledge of the vehicles I was selling, I would also drive an example of every new model we aquired (which in Saturn, wasn't much.) I didn't drive the bag off them, just enough to to be able to answer customer's questions with some accuracy.
To many salespeople, managers, and technicians, after being surrounded by vehicles day in and day out, all cars are just iron. They are just cars to many people in the industry. Therefore they don't have an uncontrollable urge to get on the highway and lay two dark black patches of rubber. They are doing a job. The pizza hut guy doesn't take a bite out of every pizza, and bankers don't go back into the vault to roll naked in the money.
What exactly would you have to do to a vehicle over a distance of 60 miles to cause significant long term harm? Is a muscle car really that sensitive? You could probably thrash it at the track for 100 miles when brand new and never hurt it.

Is that why we should wash our hands after we handle money?

My 04 had 27 miles on it from the dealer and a sticker on it saying it had been driven something like 24 miles as a quality check. you guys with 80 miles from the lot, your car was beat on by the employees of the dealership. You think a 17 year old kid that washes these cars doesn't take it out for a spin when a new model comes in..yeah right..
