Test Drive in K.C.
I test drove a 2005 GT 5 spd today (Nov 6) in Kansas City. Dealership was annoying about it, but after repeatedly assuring them I was a serious buyer they said OK. They had one GT and claimed to be trying to sell it for $3000 over sticker (tonight), so test drives were frowned upon. I told them to get real. Seemed like the key was to find a young aggressive salesguy, which I did. He gave in.
Anyway....I've driven a lot of sports cars, and this is a very nice drive. It's fast and sounds great under load. I've read a lot of people who think it sounds pretty tough at idle. I did not think that. In fact, I was surprised how quiet it really sounded at idle. Maybe my expectations were too high from reading all these posts, but even clearing my head and evaluating it as best I could, it did not sound like a serious sports car at idle. Sure...give it some gas and you can hear it. But with your foot off the gas, it's practically quiet. However, in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear with the hammer down it sounded great. And my salesguy let me absolutely thrash it. I know I blew at least and eigth inch of tread on on the on-ramp. Easy. He just laughed. And cheered me. I wish every test drive was like that.
My only real complaint is the position of the center console lid in relation to the shifter. I am 5'10 and 165. Normal size. And the left front point of the center console storage lid dug straight into my right elbo. I felt it immediately, and it was supremely annoying. That will have to be replaced by someone in the after- market or re-designed. It's unacceptable for an otherwise very nice experience in the cabin.
I liked the GT a lot. It's an excellent experience for $27k. They said there was a 2 month wait time if you ordered tonight. Otherwise, $3000 over sticker. I told them to have a nice weekend, and forget about $3000 over.
This car is not wicked fast....and it is noticably less thrilling than a C6 vette...but you'll save a lot of dough for the kids college tuition too. I'd say it's worth it. I'd also say nearly every single car around me looked, rolled down their windows and cheered, and honked at the stop lights. It gets a lot of attention.

I have to also disagree that the car isn't fast. This is the single fastest Mustang GT (stock) to ever roam the earth. In addition, it's also BY FAR the most refined. This refinement can lead to mis-perceptions about the car's ability to accelerate.
During my cruise today, just after leaving the kid in the Subaru for fried, I looked down and the speedo read 110. I felt almost like I was sitting in my easy chair. Car carries speed verrrry easily.

I ordered my 2005 Screamin' Yellow GT this morning (11-6) in Overland Park, KS from Extreme Ford. I got it for less than $700.00 over invoice. Was told with Ford's Christmas shut down it would be 8-10 weeks. But if your in KC go see Chastin Lollas at Extreme Ford.
Tell him the blonde that ordered the Yellow GT sent you.

I agree that the car's exhaust note is more tame at idle. But when my car has been sitting overnight and I start it in the morning, it is very, very authoritative and loud. It's almost as if the car is angry that it has been woken up in the morning.
My wife and I just got back from test driving an 05 GT automatic, white with red leather seats. The car in one word is Amazing! I've owne a 96 supercharged Saleen and a 00 GT also both work stick shift. This new car is so refined, that's why it doesn't seem as fast to most people. However it is by far faster than any stock GT mustang I have driven. The automatic tranny is super quick and keeps the engine in the power band great. It also drive so very very smooth compared to the old platform. It is really hard to tell if the rear end is live axle or independant because of how well the engineers have tuned it. I cannot wait to buy one myself but i have to wait for our house to be built before getting a new car loan. Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts on this amazing new car, great job ford!
