Hello,

Can anyone tell me the tax/tags process if I'm buying my 05 mustang from out of state. I assume I don't pay anything at the dealer. What do I do? Do I do anything before I go to pick up the car or is everything taken care of after. Also...what if I want vanity tags, can I get them in advance?

Thanks.

depends on the state. Usually you can just pay your taxes at time of purchase for the state the vehicle is registered too. On used cars, it is often left for the consumer to report their purchase and pay taxes for that at the DMV. On new cars, you get a certificate of origin to present to an inspector as well for your state inspection. You either get 30day temp tags or some dealers can do the tag work for adjoining states. Vanity tags take longer then normal tags, you can get them on your current car now and transfer them, or order your new ones and they just add the extra fee on top of the tags you were just issued.

Well put Kevin.

I bought my (new) car out of state, and got a temp tag to drive it home, and I could have rolled the taxes into the financing at the time, but I elected to pay them myself when I got home.

Remember to get the certificate of origin that Kevin mentioned too. You can't register it n your state without that.
