Tank size
#1
Ok, had my car for about 2 weeks now. On my second tank of gas. I'm getting around 20 MPG on this second tank according to the dash. The dash also says I've used 12.7 gallons, and that I have about 47 miles to E. Doing the math, that's about a total of 15 gallons, not 16? Is it considered E when there is only one gallon left? Shouldn't it be about 67 miles to E if it had 16 gallons? And I'm sure the tank was full.

16 gallon tank. The fuel gauge is very accurate, 1/4 tank is right at 4 gallons.
The distance till empty is a constantly moving target, depending upon what you have been doing and how you are driving at the precise moment you are reading it. I have found the (12.7 in your case) gallons used to be very accurate. You really can't tell from tank to tank becaue there are too many variables. Set it and forget it for a month or 3, then see what your MPGs are for the car over time. That will give you more meaningful information than, say, how did I do today.

Good topic, I was wondering about the tank size myself. I had the gas light come on today for the first time (I don't have IUP) and filled up with 13.725 gallons. I guess I had plenty left.

i still can't tell yet.however that dadgone reading that tells you how many miles per gallon you are getting drives me crazy. The first 3 weeks it read around 17.8 and this week iv'e been doing the exact same driving and now it 's been reading 16.0 Also hate how it keeps switching to certain miles to empty. :bang:

Yeah, that is kind of annoying. I wish it would tell you once and be done with it until you get really low. I don't really need to know the fuel is "low" when I have 70 miles left, and then every time I start the car and a few other times in between.
I just filled the car up, just over 14 Gallons, dash said about 13.8/13.9 somewhere in there I think. Had the gas shut off problem, at least when I had the automatic thing all the way up, I put it down a notch and it filled up ok...though I think it spilled over a little bit. It overflowed a bit the first time I filled it up too.
So, I'm guessing it's pretty much got a reserve built in, so E isn't exactly empty, just "fill it up now please."

My focus always had the gas light turn on when there were 3 gallons left. Sounds like your mustang is the same.

Ok, get this. I reset all my info center stuff everytime I get gas. One time I was looking at it and it said 1.0 gallon's used, 16.4 miles on the trip meter, but my MPG reading was 15.1. WTF?
I mean seriously. The "gallons used" meter should be very accurate. The odometer reading should be *exact*. How hard is it to make the MPG reading accurate? All you do is take the trip meter reading and divide it by the gallons used meter. The MPG reading should do that every 10 secs or so.
Of course that is granted that you have separate meters for everything. I mean, when you restart your MPG meter, it should have its own trip meter and its own gallons used meter that is independent of the other ones in the info center.
