I just got my 06 GT a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the suspension or something sounds like it's loose when going over bumps. I live on a dirt rode and you can hear something under the car, I didn't know if this was normal or that maybe the suspension needs to get broke in. Right now I have a little over 700 miles on it. One other thing is when traveling around 70 to 74 on interstate I get kind of a rumbling sound as if you had a little bass turned on from the rear of the car. It's not too bad but I just wanted to know if anyone else had that. Other than that the car is awesome. Just wish I would have got a manual.

ok me too!!

i am going to see if i can test drive another mustang at a dealer because i'm starting to panic that i've got the whole clunky suspension problem and i'm set to lower it this weekend but i want to figure out if it needs to be fixed before i do that.

it's not a loud noise, it just sounds like "an old man" when going over bumps...i used to drive an audi before this so i can't tell if this is just the way the car is or what....

??

I have the exact same thing... when I go over bumps it sounds like a large CLUNK coming from my left rear.

Did you guys figure this out or get it fixed?

I have the same problem on my 06 that I got a couple of weeks ago. I found that there appears to be excessive end play in the rear axles.

If you push on your left rear tire and rock the car side-to-side, you will see what I mean. I can see/hear the rotors moving in and out touching the calipers. Is this normal?

count me in too for that noise over bumps. It's definately coming from the right front strut. I had the TSB for popping noise done thinking it'll fix it, but it didn't. Sounds like a bad strut or loose one atleast.

Better add me to the list. I just do not know what is normal for this car and what is not? The transmission sounds weird, but according to everything I have read that is normal also. It sucks, because when I had my 93 I had a independent local shop that new those cars really well, but since has closed. Now I just read all the speculation off the internet like everyone else. Sometimes I miss my Toyotas because they never had any issues.

Try tightening the lower struts that connect to the forward anti-sway bar. They must be kept tight, for even if slightly loose, they will send the sound you describe throughout the car. In other words, this rattle can sometimes sound like it comes from the back too, but it is those front lower struts.

I have the clunky suspension AND the rumbling at highway speeds. I just got home from a discouraging visit with my service dept. They just don't know jack **** about these cars. Oil changes are the extent of their experience. I mentioned the TSB about the popping strut and he just gave me that slack jawed look like I was speaking a different language. Then I tell him about the driveline vibration I'm getting from 52-58 mph. We then go for a ride and I can feel it fine but he's not so sure. My suspension clunks over nearly every bump. It drives me nuts but he's just not picking it up. I'm thinking about getting rid of the car because of these two things that the dealer claims they can't detect. In a genius move, I took it in today hours after having a Borla catback system installed. I have yet to adjust to the increased noise levels and all I can hear during the test drive is exhaust! I'm thinking that I need a ProCharger to make me feel better. If it's gonna make noise and vibrate, I may as well be stupid fast!

Brian,

It's interesting that you mention that. I'll go out and check mine. When I bought my car back in January, the rear sway bar was not attached on the right side. Bracket and bolt = Missing! I've always wondered if anything else was loose and I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Sure sounds like it.

Hi Adam,
That is amazing that the rear anti-sway wasn't bolted on at all. Do let me know what you find out.
Thanks, Brian.

I have the problem as well on mine, but only on the right front side. It has been to 4 different dealers so far and is at the 5th one right now. They all hear it but say the car is "normal". BTW my car was built about a month after the date on the TSB issued for the strut replacement/repair. All of the dealers swear I have the most up to date suspension parts on the car and that nothing is loose or missing.
I say BS!

Other issues include having to get the following either replaced or repaired because of rattles...Headliner, dash, shift boot, rear seat plastic trim by trunk, plastic surround by the radio and passenger door trim. Also my rear passenger side bumper cover kept "poppin off" due to a broken clip. I live in Cleveland and its only now starting to get cold, can't imagine what the car is going to sound like come spring!

Love the car but too many "1st year" issues.

Anyway if anyone comes up with a solution for the front end I'd love to hear it...What about a strut bracket to tighten things up a bit, is there an aftermarket one available yet, that doesn't totally kill the ride quality?

I tightened everything in the front suspension and came to the conclusion that this is a normal "thunk"
It has been in to the dealer twice and they cannot find a thing wrong.
I put a large "pry-board" under the tire (after jacking up the car and letting the tire hang free) and kinda tested the up and down motion with the board.
The "thunk" comes from the rapid rebound of the strut. Tomorrow I am going to try some sound deadening material I bought and apply it to the plastic splash panels.
I hope that this will lick the problem, as I have spent some real time trying to eliminate the dreaded THUNK

Wow pwt13,

"It has been to 4 different dealers so far and is at the 5th one right now."

Either you have tremendous patience or you're at the end of your rope. I'm afraid to let the dealers touch my Mustang after countless service dept. disasters with many F-150's over the years. I've had "The Thunk" since day 1 (January 3rd) and I'm generally an optimist, but I don't think they will find the problem so I'm just going to learn to live with it. I've been on 2 test drives with service advisors and neither could hear it. Big surprise there, huh?

Since others have the same problem it leads me to believe that some of our beloved Mustangs just have noisy suspensions. The recent addition of a Borla exhaust has help drown mine out (and wake up the neighbors ), but I know the noise is there. Crankin' the Shaker 1000 helps too!

I think I'm going to agree with you. No point in dropping it off only to hear "it's normal" and getting all agrivated. Sooner or later Ford will either issue a TSB or someone will figure it out. Since nobody's been able to get their noisy right front clunck fixed yet, there's no reason to think I'll be the luck one.

Well, I added a stick on sound deadner to the passenger side wheel well (lined the entire wheel well and painted it as well) and this did not help matters. I checked the ball joint the tire for irregular wear and again looked at EVERY suspension part under this car --- it's perplexing??
I will stumble on the cause of this gremlin eventually.........
Maybe not the fix, as I will go to FoMoCo and tell em MAKE IT RIGHT!!!
