Strange indentation on upper rear quarter panel??!! Any ideas?

My 06 GT has a very shallow indentation/dimple on the upper rear quarter, passenger side, about the halfway point to the rear.

It does not appear to have been caused by any damage to the body. It may have been there when I purchased it, not really sure. I was wondering if it could be caused the the manufacturing/structure of the panel itself. The indentation is right about where the bracing runs underneath - as far as I can tell looking from inside the trunk. Again, it is very shallow and hard to see, but as it is a black car, and if you look hard enough and, you can see it. I wish i had a pic, but I think it would be kinda hard to capture.

The reason I ask is I vaguely recall mention of other cars (maybe it was the 90's F-Bodies) exhibiting the same thing, caused by body flex (?), not sure.

Oh well, I guess I may just have to wait until I get the innevidable ding on that side, and see if a PDR guy can help remove the little indentation as well. Can they do work on the rear quarter panels??
Thanks

It sounds like the same dimple my 07 Satin Silver has, upper middle rear quarter passenger side. I had the car for months and never noticed it myself but then a friend that has an eye for cars saw it as he walked up to it for the first time.

I looked at the paint closely and could not see any evidence of impact or scratching. It is slight and not too noticeable so I am sure the dimple was there when I purchased the car.

Earl,

YES!!!! It sounds like we have the identical dimple!!

DITTO!

Do you think it is a manufacturing glitch?? To be honest, I do. If you look at where it is relative to the construction of the panel, I believe it lies on a stress point where the box bracing lies. Perhaps, as the panel flexes under load, the bracing pulled the dimple in as it is anchored to the framing. If so, kinda stinks!! I doubt it can be fixed, and unlike your nice SILVER car, you can see it on my black one!!

You will also notice on both front fenders (see the below pic) a very shallow vertical dent...again, I believe this happens during the stamping of the panel...I've seen this shallow dent on both sides of most Mustangs.

Wow!

I am surprised no one has posted about this before. (I know, because I searched my @$$ off before asking.......

Well, good to know it wasn't a misplaced elbow, or something......
I guess I can shelve my "must kill whomever touched my car" fantasies.

It's good to know I can get it removed. On a black car, believe me, if you look, you can see it pretty good. That kinda bugs me.

Yep, I had the little vertical ripple in the fender of my red '05 as well. Haven't noticed anything on my silver '06 though. Silver hides everything pretty well.

I have that dimple on my drivers side, it stands out like a sore thumb when it's freshly waxed, but otherwise it's hardly noticeable.

I have the same dimple in my 07, passenger rear quarter panel. Has been there since day 1 but not noticable enough for me to fix it.

Yea I know, thats why I didn't let it bother me. If that area ever gets a door ding then maybe I would have that fixed at the same time.

I'd be willing to bet it's from the decklid and hood fitting fixtures. They're huge and heavy and manually positioned by the line workers. If they give a little bump one way or another it could easily leave a dimple. That's my WAG anyway.

I have those vertical ripples on my upper rear passenger's quarter panel. I just noticed it yesterday. It looks like the paint didnt settle correctly when it was painted. There is no indentation however.

I had a small dimple on the top of my driver rear quarter panel next to the trunk lid (on a vert). Looks as if someone had an an elbow on it. $50 for the Paintless Dent Repair and it was perfect.
